Something I have yet to explore or understand is exactly why St. Nicholas is so beloved by Orthodox Christians, at least more so than other saints. Is there a particular reason why he enjoys such an elevated level of veneration; some special story that I'm not familiar with?

I'm curious about this too. More than once newcomers have walked up to me in church and demanded I take them to St. Nicholas...

1. Everybody loves a dude who hands out gold.

2. Many, many miracles attributed to his intercession.

3. Especially known for rescuing/protecting those at sea, which, until very recently, was a pressing issue for most civilizations.

Edit: Also, related to number 1, are the folk traditions in some Orthodox lands involving St. Nick bringing candies, etc. to kids on Dec. 6.

Not to mention St. Nicholas' great show of zeal at the 1st ecumenical council where he Punched Arius in the Nose!

What sinner doesn't love that!

Exactly - that's what attracted me to St. Nicholas!
