Ok, I admit that I have difficulties with the idea of prayer and whatnot. But I did want to make a prayer request about this nonetheless. I just got a call from an Uncle that my 88 year old grandmother, Helen, fell and broke her hip. This happened after she fell a couple years ago and broke her other hip. She has been very active for an 88 year old, and goes out four times a week on a bus to walk around the mall or go to a movie with friends. She is also very active with the family, going out every weekend to eat somewhere with one of her sons, having her ten year old grandson sleep overnight on the weekends, etc. She was actually planning on visiting me this weekend, and she was looking forward to seeing her great grandchildren (of course, we can just wait until she has recovered some and take the kids to see her at her house). She has been a widow for 11 years now, and the ability to get out is what has really kept her going. And she saw her mother sit at home and do nothing, and slowly decline till she died at age 96, and vowed that she would stay active as long as she could. If this injury makes her change her active lifestyle, I fear that she will become very depressed and lead a very miserable life.

First, thank you all for your prayers. Second, sorry about not getting back to the thread sooner, I was waiting until I knew a bit more about what was going to happen as far as recovery went. She did fine with the surgery, and afterwards was sort of alternating between being depressed and being in good spirits. She got moved today to a rehabilitation center, which she'll apparently be at for a while (how long depends on how quickly she recovers I guess). I guess two positives are 1) that she just went through this a couple years ago, so it may not seem as foreign as she has some experience with it, and 2) she quit smoking a few years ago, which is good as I'm sure they have strict rules about not smoking, and that would have drove her crazy. She hasn't wanted to talk long when I've called, but from what I can tell, she's still in a good deal of pain, and she doesn't have much movement in her leg, but it doesn't seem like the injury was serious enough to really put her out of commission for the long term. So that's good news, anyway.

My grandma left the rehab facility today and arrived safely at her home. Her recovery is coming along ok, but slowly. She still has a lot of pain, and there is still significant swelling, but apparently she was able to get around enough that they ok'd her going home. They gave her some things for around the house that will help her more easily get into bed, use the bathroom, etc. She lives alone, but she has plenty of family nearby who can stop in and help out if she needs anything (e.g. two of her sons live in the same town). It's still too early to tell what, if any, long term issues she will have from all of this.

I just got a call from my gram, and she is not really able to get around the house yet like she needs to, so she is going to stay in a nursing home in town for 1-2 weeks, until she gets a bit better.

So, it's almost been a month, but my gram is still in the nursing home. It's not even her hip any more that is the problem, but her swelled up foot is still giving her problems getting around on her own. They hope that she will be able to get home by next week. She is staying in good spirits, especially considering that she's been away from home for so long.

A month later, and gram is still in the nursing home. She actually had to be admitted to the hospital for dehydration at one point. She is improving, but s l o w l y. She can get around ok with a walker, but she's still not quite where she needs to be to go back to living alone. She got out of the hospital a couple weeks ago, and she visited me so she could see the kids (who came on the same day), and I went with the kids to see her on Easter Sunday, so she has seen her great grandchildren a couple times over the past couple weeks, which helped lift her spirits.

"Lord have mercy."
Never hesitate to ask for our prayers my friend. I know how much my grandmothers meant to me. They passed many years ago, but their love and encouragement enabled me to survive numerous adversities. I know your children lift her spirits, so take them by to see her as often as you can. Sometimes we fear that the elderly will be bothered by the rambunctiousness of children, but often it has a profoundly positive effect on them.

Thanks for all the prayers My gram is now at home, and she is making more progress each day. She uses the walker if she is alone, and if someone is at the house with her she practices walking around with a cane. She is going to go out to the mall this Sunday and test out how she does there. She hopes to start using the senior citizen bus* again soon and going back out. * Where she lives they have a program for senior citizens who don't drive, in which they will pick you up in a bus and take you to the mall or stores or the movies or wherever.

Not that I want to give you weekly updates or anything... but... my gram fell again today Thankfully she wasn't hurt bad, and her hip was fine. She just scraped her arm up a bit. The bad thing is, she was using her walker at the time, and she still fell. I'm afraid that this is a bad sign as far as her getting back to the active lifestyle she once lived.

She seems to be. She has been going with family to the mall once a week to walk around, and she has been practicing in her house, and she hasn't fallen since the incident I mentioned. I fear that she will never get back to where she was, but she may yet regain the ability to go out on the bus to wherever she wants.

I don't expect that anyone is still praying for my gram, but just as an update... things have not gone well. She is still living at home, but sadly we don't know for how much longer she'll be around. Her short term memory is completely gone, and she has declined in spurts in other areas as well (e.g. she can barely write anymore, even to sign her name). We have it drilled into her head that she is not allowed to take her pills on her own, and has to be given them, otherwise she'd probably overdose. Still, she is not overly depressed, and is handling the situation as best she can.

Into thy hands, O Lord, I commend the soul of thy servant, Helen, and beseech thee to grant her rest in the place of thy rest, where all the blessed Saints repose, and where the light of thy countenance shineth forever. And I beseech thee also to grant that our present lives may be godly, sober, and blameless, that, we too may be made worthy to enter into thy heavenly Kingdom with those we love but see no longer: for thou art the Resurrection, and the Life, and the Repose of thy departed servant, O Christ our God, and unto thee we ascribe glory: to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Asteriktos, I am very sorry to hear this, I am going to ask for a Panikhida on 17th of august for two persons, if you wish I will add your grandmother too, just tell me via post or PM, what was her name and surname. If she was other faith, and you think she would like to have it in her own denomination, don't worry to say, there are plenty of Churches in Warsaw.
