Forgive me if this question should be somewhere else, but since Eritrea has a large OO presence I thought this might be a good place to ask.

Is anybody familiar with the present situation in Eritrea, that is social and spiritual? I'm asking because over the years I've spoken with people who have been there, and they spoke of it as a charming, civilized place, with happy people and a balanced life. But today I was looking a a Reuters slide show, which identifies Eritrea as one of the world's "least free" places and showed a grim picture of an emaciated man.

Has anybody any recent personal knowledge of Eritrea? Has the place deteriorated, or is this just another case of journalistic bias?
