7.0 earthquake hits Haiti sparking tsunami watch(CNN) -- A major earthquake struck just off the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince on Tuesday, sparking a tsunami watch for parts of the Caribbean, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Raymond Joseph, Haiti's ambassador to the United States, told CNN he had little information about the extent of damage from the quake, which had a reported magnitude of 7.0. But he said the suffering inflicted on the impoverished Caribbean nation was likely to be "catastrophic." Full article can be read here: http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/americas/01/12/haiti.earthquake/index.html?eref=igoogle_cnnLord, have mercy!

I've just read this on the news. There was a 7.0 quake very close to Haiti this evening and from what communication is getting out, things are bad with collapsed buildings and trapped people. http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE60B5IZ20100112Lord, have mercy

May the Lord protect the people of Haiti.
Is there any info on any of the Orthodox churches being affected by this earthquake? I know ROCOR and the Greeks have missions there. Will add the Haitian people to the petitions after the Gospel reading, this Sunday.

I'm not sure of the status of the Orthodox missions in Haiti, but I do know that IOCC is working with other agencies to provide help for the those affected. http://www.iocc.org/news/1-13-10haiti.aspxВечнаја Памјат! Lord, have mercy. Another charity organization is run by St. John of Kronstadt Press, a ROCOR parish. They are building a school in Haiti which is almost complete (assuming it has not been destroyed) and spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ, as well as feeding and clothing the poor. So if anyone wants to give to a humble Orthodox mission there, here is a link: http://www.sjkp.org/search.php?static=3379Link approved by Fr. Chris - PtA

This was posted on my Parish website concerning our twinning Ministry in Dos Polais and Fr. Elizier...
At this time, due to widespread power outages and lack of cell phone coverage, we have not heard from Fr. Elizier concerning the impact of the earthquake on Dos Polais. As we receive word from Fr. Elizier, we will update this message. Please keep the people of Haiti in your prayers during this terrible tragedy.
Please pray for Fr. Elizier and the community of Dos Polais. Thank you.

Another charity organization is run by St. John of Kronstadt Press, a ROCOR parish. They are building a school in Haiti which is almost complete (assuming it has not been destroyed) and spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ, as well as feeding and clothing the poor. So if anyone wants to give to a humble Orthodox mission there, here is a link:
Link soliciting donations to a charitable organization other than IOCC disabled pending Fr. Chris's approval.
Alveus Lacuna, I appreciate your desire to seek assistance for those suffering through this catastrophe, but such solicitations for donations do need to be approved by the forum admin before they can appear on the forum. (I believe posts soliciting donations to the IOCC already have blanket approval, since the IOCC is the official charitable arm of SCOBA.)
- PtA
Just a note, this mission of "Fr" Gregory Williams is no longer in the Orthodox Church, and, according to Met. Hilarion, is "hostile" to the legitimate ROCOR mission run by Fr. Jean-Chenier Dumais and Fr. Gregoire Legouté. The legitimate mission can be reached through the Synodal cathedral in New York. To my knowledge no one has reached Fr Jean-Chenier or Fr Gregoire, so please pray for their health and safety and that of their flocks.

The legitimate ROCOR mission in Haiti need all the support and prayer they can get, and I thought it might help if the information was known. I just didn't want anyone to accidentally support schismatics who undermine the Church.

Yes indeed to all everyone has said--AMEN!
Lord have mercy, Lord have mercy, Lord have mercy! For both living and the asleep and their families and the nation at large. Blessed Theotokos please pray to your Son for them, watch over and protect them!
I lit a candle at our parish feast day service by the Theotokos yesterday for this very sad event and the people. I pray God grants them mercy and speedy recovery!

I just learned today that a recent graduate of one of the local universities here was reported to have died in the quake. http://www.oregonlive.com/news/index.ssf/2010/01/orphans_called_university_of_p.htmlMay the memory of the handmaid of God, Molly, be eternal!
