I used to be a sacristan at a Catholic church. The incense we had most of the time seemed to consist of scented wood shavings.

I love incesence. For some reason it reminds me of what the Holy Spirit would "smell like".

I can remember being in a Catholic church and having to excuse myself because their incense gave me MAJOR headaches. But the Eastern Orthodox Church's incense is soothing...
My problem is quite the opposite, unfortunately! But it seems to be getting somewhat better with time, (and benadryl !)

'Twas the vile stench of heresy!

I've heard the same, that Catholic Churches use incense mixed with wood shavings... Eastern Orthodox Churches use pure frankincense that isn't mixed with wood shavings...

There does seem to be a penchant to use wood chip based incense among many modern Latin parishes, I assume because it is inexpensive. There are some good Catholic incense makers like the monks of Prinknash that is frankincense based.

That would explain it. Wood smoke gives me headaches too.

I remember when I was a small kid before and after 1989, going to burials and other church ceremonies, that there wasn't any frankincense used there or myrrh. What they used was local pine or fir-tree resin. Now they import stuff from Greece (?), but at that time as far as I know, that was considered incense.

Maybe some do, as Deacon Lance has posted, but I've seen a number of liturgical incense mixtures that have nothing like wood shavings or chips. They're made of resins such as frankincense and myrrh and such and sometimes other oils, gums and spices.

Talking of incense, beware of buying incense in dollar shops and so forth. Much of this incense is unfortunately made by the idolatrous hare krishna cult and you will end up attracting demons instead of any good presence.

There are some Orthodox monasteries and churches I know of that make incense such as Holy Transfiguration Monastery, Holy Cross Hermitage, and Orthodox Incense.

Then you should check out the Orthodox Incense website since they have a bunch of incense from the Holy Mountain. http://orthodoxincense.com/holymountain.html

I always quite liked the pine-resin incense used at the Coptic church here. Unfortunately, the bishop at my church doesn't let me use it because it's too strong and affects his breathing, and so we only use the milder frankincense-based stuff.

Thanks! And that's really good incense, like the one used in church. I'm buying the complete kit with also I think several of the different types. The "Byzantium" one so I can think of my orthodox bros
