Stephen III
« on: December 15, 2009, 01:35:24 PM »
Was St. Stephen the Great of Moldavia EO (since he is venerated in our Church by Romanians), or RC? I ask because apparently he was awarded the title "Athleta Christi nobilis" (Noble Champion of the Faith) by Pope Sixtus IV. Is this title awarded to non-Catholic Christians as well?

Very definitely Orthodox.  Yes, the Vatican tried to claim him, and the saint complained of being stabbed in the back by his "Christian brothers" as he fought off the Turks.
Question a friend, perhaps he did not do it; but if he did anything so that he may do it no more.
A hasty quarrel kindles fire,
and urgent strife sheds blood.
If you blow on a spark, it will glow;
if you spit on it, it will be put out;

Yes, the Vatican tried to claim him

But, how does that even happen? Isn't it clear that he was Orthodox?

Yes, but in the West they were still attempting to broker conversion for military help.
"If you are going to serve the Lord, be prepared for times when you will be put to the test. Be sincere and determined. Keep calm when trouble comes. Stay with the Lord; never abandon Him and you will be prosperous at the end of your days. Accept whatever happens to you. Even if you suffer humiliation, be patient. Gold is tested by fire and human character is tested in the furnace of humiliation. Trust the Lord and He will help you. Walk straight in His ways and put your hope in Him. " Sir 2:1-6

i always understood he was Orthodox. and standing in one of the ancient churches built by him and still in use by the Orthodox faithful, was an honour i will never forget.
