Article about possibility of Turkey in the EU (in german)
« on: December 10, 2009, 11:16:32 PM »
I was doing my daily german study and came across this great article in German about the possibility of Turkey joining the EU.  Basically, it says that as of 10 years ago Turkey was supposed to begin the process of going through the EU "checklist" of preparation for the trial period of entering the EU.  The article goes on to say that after the latest evaluation, Turkey is very much behind what it is supposed to be doing to acclimate to the EU community and what it stands for.

It is interesting b/c one of the points they bring up is Cyprus and how Turkey needs to be OK with what Cyprus wants in order to be in the EU b/c they have to be one with all the other member states (Greece).

Anyway, here is is in german:  http://www.dw-world.de/dw/article/0,,5002419,00.html

And I used "babelfish" to translate it.  Its chopy, but it will suffice for those of you eager to read the points.  http://babelfish.yahoo.com/translate_url?doit=done&tt=url&intl=1&fr=bf-home&trurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dw-world.de%2Fdw%2Farticle%2F0%2C%2C5002419%2C00.html&lp=de_en&btnTrUrl=Translate

Slava Bogu ,,,this link was automatically translated with the google toolbar it gives a botton that you press that say translate http://www.dw-world.de/dw/article/0,,5002419,00.html heres the translation of this link...

Much has changed in Turkey, moved, official since the country's EU membership candidate: The death penalty was abolished, the criminal law reform and fight corruption. The political climate in the country had completely changed, says policy expert Dogan Tilic. "In Turkey, recently something happened that they had previously never thought possible: It is under intense discussion about the role of the military in politics."

Praise and criticism for Turkey

The controversial National Security Council was reformed, which has identified over decades, the Turkish policy. Now his skills have been significantly limited. Also in terms of Armenia seems to make things happen. The warring nations had been about 15 years no diplomatic political relations more. Now the borders are to be reopened. In view of these reforms, many Turks can not understand that the EU accession has not yet moved much closer.

But there are major issues on which Turkey has moved only minimally or not at all towards the EU: the country for years refused to open its ports to planes and ships from the Greek part of Cyprus. Turkey recognizes the Republic of Cyprus does not. A country can only become a member of the Union unless it accepts all other members. Another point, the EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn pointed out: The Constitution of Turkey must be urgently reformed. The guarantee of freedom of expression and unrestricted registration of political parties should be included.

Can reforming zeal?

"Foremost is the pressing issues of Turkey's Kurdish question. When you see the pictures of the street riots in the southeast of the country or in some districts of Istanbul also provides that one: It has been made in the Kurdish issue, very little progress," says Dogan Tilic. There are a few months ago the so-called initiative to resolve the Kurdish problem, aiming to have twelve of the 15 million Kurds in Turkey until more rights. Other projects have been implemented: There are some place signs in the Kurdish language, Kurdish language schools and the state broadcaster TRT broadcasts in Kurdish since the beginning of 2009.

In the current progress report, report of the EU (14.10.2009) was nevertheless criticized that the zeal for reform in Turkey has declined overall. The Turkish Minister for Europe Bagisch improvement has praised in that they were aware of the problems and this would seriously tackle. He is certain: The progress report will be in the coming years much more positively.
