"Supernatural"
« on: November 29, 2009, 04:42:40 PM »
Anyone watch Supernatural on the CW?  It always looked interesting to me but I was never around when it was on.  I did, however, manage to catch part of an episode last week and it certainly kept my attention.  If you have watched it, what are your thoughts on it?  And please, don't waste your time rambling on about the theological issues or ramifications of the show; they're obvious enough to not take them seriously.

Personally, I have really enjoyed the series.  I started watching it late (midway, 2nd season) and was lost for a little while (some episodes follow the general arc more, while others are more autonomous), but then I was able to watch a marathon that went through the entire first season and everything fit into place.

If someone watches the show and gets hung up on theological issues, I pity them.  :P  The show has some great episodes, has a good storyline with good acting, etc.  If you have the opportunity to start from the very beginning and watch the entire series, I highly recommend it.  On top of that, I really enjoy the various angel characters.  They have that... Tyrael from Diablo II flare to them (not visually, but personality-wise).

I have always enjoyed the series. Haven't caught up with season four yet, but will do that sometime. What appeals to me about this programme is the underlying alchemical theme; that in the process of overcoming evil at the risk of one's own safety one's person is refined, reprocessed and perfected.

 I kind of like both the characters because they are bumbling on regardless. Kind of reminds me of me!

SO FULL OF THEOLOGICAL ERRORS! THEY ARE OBVIOUSLY UNDER THE SPELL OF THE POPE!

I haven't watched many episodes, but here it goes.
Okay, look. It's a nice and little series, but it's still...a little one. You can get bored to it very easily, I believe. At least, I did. Cool, handsome, young boys who hunt down demons and all. It's modern Ghostbusters, if you ask me.
Though I've walked the valley of the shadow of the death, I've fallen not. Not completely. Not yet.

thanks, all!  would it be far off to say it's like Buffy the Vampire Slayer pared down, as it were, with just two real "heroes" as opposed to a group of them?  how is the actual story writing/dialogue?

a friend has the first series on dvd and is giving me the first couple discs.  I look forward to watching them on my lunch hours :)

Yes, I suppose you could compare the two in that way. Both are serious in their attempts to be a little scary, but amusing and somewhat corny at times. I think that is part of their charm.

Just so you know, there is always the danger of being told that you are a hell-bound witch/pagan/blaspheming "fill-in-the-blank" for watching this sort of thing. ;)

Just finished with the first episode.

I like it very much, so far.  It does a very good job setting a great, creepy mood reminiscent of the best old time radio shows from "Suspense" and "Quiet Please".

I think I'll continue on.  :)
