Does this mean your Bishops would not allowing singing Full Length Hymns outside of service? Im just curious about the sacredness of their teachings when Liturgy is over. Would it be appropriate?

Our bishops allow carol-singing in Church and we do it at the communion of the priest and the people, before the sermon that is, and at the end of the liturgy and vespers. But that's the Romanian Church. I've seen that Americans are more strict about this.

It's a time honored tradition among the Carpatho-Rusyns of both Catholic and Orthodox bent to sing paraliturgical hymns during communion, even in the Old Country.

This is one of the few videos that present the authentic and old way of caroling proper to the Romanian village (and to a larger area in the Balkans and Carpathians I assume). The repertoire is very old and very local. The content is not overtly religious, at least not in a very dogmatic Christian way, the group of carolers seems to be traditional as well, and the footage is not a staged, "artistic" rendition of these folk customs.

Traditionally, children sing carols door to door in Greece ringing triangles and receive sweets from the house's occupants in return for their blessing. Here's the most well known Christmas Carol: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgnpBGmGlx4The translation is: Good evening noblemen If this is your will, Christ’s holy birth May I sing in your noble house Christ is being born today In the town of Bethlehem Heavens rejoice All of nature is happy. Inside the cave (He) is being born In a manger for horses The King of all the universe The Creator of everything. A crowd of angels are singing, “Hossana in the highest!”, And holy is The faith of the shepherds. From Persia three magi arrive With their gifts A bright star shows them the way Without any delay. In this house where we have come May no stone ever crack And the Master of the house May he live for many years.

Schultz is correct that the singing of carols is a time honored custom among the Rusyns both in Europe and the Americas. I should note that it is never the custom to substitute the proper verses of Matins, Vespers etc. with such carols. In the chant tradition of the Rusyns, the melody only of the carol "Divnaja Novina" is adapted to the proper words of the Cherubic Hymn during the Nativity season. Several of the venerable songs (many of which have Ukrainian, Slovak, Polish variants) are available for listening at the ACROD website as sung by the St. John's Orthodox Church Male Chorus of Bridgeport, CT. USA. http://www.acrod.org/multimedia/audio/liturgicalmusic/pchant-christmascarols

Traditional Byzantine Carol: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHckQsqemQ8The God who is without beginning has descendeth and dwelt in the Virgin eroorem-eroorem-eroorerooh-eroorem, rejoice 0 spotless one. Thou art the King of all and the Lord, Thou came to refashion Adam eroorem-eroorem-eroorerooh-eroorem, rejoice 0 spotless one. Ye mortals rejoice and be glad, ye angelic hosts jubilate eroorem-eroorem-eroorerooh-eroorem, rejoice 0 spotless one. Come hither to see in the cave, laying in the manger, the Lord eroorem-eroorem-erooreroorem, rejoice 0 Sovereign Lady. Magi from the East are coming, bearing noble gifts eroorem-eroorem-erooreroorem, rejoice 0 Sovereign Lady. Herod heard the news and trembled with fury the godless one teriririrem-teriririrem-tem and ananes, rejoice 0 spotless one. Following an unexpected course, the magi from Persia came teriririrem-teriririrem-tem and ananes, rejoice 0 spotless one. Out of wickedness, the tyrant ordered the slaughter of all Rachel's children teriririrem-teriririrem-tem and ananes, rejoice 0 spotless one.

Here's one of my most belowed Ukrainian Orthodox Christmas carols: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5mTyoYkERc&feature=relatedThe words are amazing: "God is being born - just who can comprehend that? His name is Jesus, and Mary is His Mother. Behold, the angels are fearing the Newborn; here, a steer is standing and trembling; there, a donkey is grazing, and he is bewildered; the shepherds are falling down on their knees, as they see God in human flesh; all of that is here, here, here..."

And this, that's a classic, I heard it since I was little... "A new joy we now have, one that was never before - a bright star is shining over the manger..." (The clip shows mostly the Carpathian mountains in winter, but also some Kyiv scenes, esp. the St. Sophia cathedral and the St. Michael's Golden-Domed monastery.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXjK9VFAnzk&feature=related

Christ is Born! Glorify Him! for all who celebrate Our Savior's birth this day! Thank you Heorhij. Here is the Nova radost stala melody chanted to the words of the Cherubic Hymn by Metropolitan Nicholas of Amissos at his 50th Anniversary last January in New Jersey. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFswLtgG2zQ

'Niebo i ziemla' in Romanian rock! I'd like to prove that Belarusians are as good as Ukrainians but I can't find any place that you can download the carols without registering (and forms are in Polish )
