I saw "Another Perfect Stranger" on a religious channel. It was a poorly acted spectacle, featuring a blonde pretty boy Jesus conversing with a girl about to enter art school on a plane with rants about how He hates religion and philosophically flimsy arguments supporting it. The "twist" that He's actually Jesus is pretty obvious from the beginning, and the miracle paintbrush at the end definitely deserved this smiley:   Roll Eyes.

I also saw As We Forgive, a documentary about reconciliation between surviving Tutsis and the Hutus who killed their families. It's a very powerful film, and by far the most "Christian" of the movies I've seen today.

I saw True Grit a week ago.  I thought it was one of the better movies I've seen in a while.  I don't think I've seen the original.  I saw one of the Rooster Cogburn movies but Katherine Hepburn was annoying, pretty but annoying, and John Wayne is a horrible drunk.  They should have gotten Johnny Cash to do it.

For those war movie people out there, I started watching Tali-Ihantala 1944 again until the GF put the cabosh on it.  IF you can find it, big IF, then it is defiantly worth watching.  No M48's masquerading as Tigers in this one.  Real T34-85s, T26s (!), a KV, and some StuGs!

We just watched _Monster Camp_   It's about NERO in Seattle and live-action RPGs. I like documentaries and my husband indulged me last night.  Facinating and just a little sad.

Just saw Gran Torino. Awesome movie. It gives pretty rough picture of American society. Is it really like that or was it completely exaggerated?

It really depends, and this movie certainly highlights some of the nastier and most violent aspects of society.  That said, I have experienced neighborhoods remarkably similar to the one portrayed, complete with Hmong gangs.  Cool  Completely exaggerated?  Unfortunately not.

  Undecided

Having been born into more peaceful part of the World that sound just unbelievable. I heard a while ago that some Mexican exchange student was a little suprised that during his stay in Finland she didn't notice any shooting anywhere. I laughed when I heard that but after seeing this movie it doesn't sound so funny anymore.

Just saw Tonari no Totoro or My Neighbor Totoro at the advice of my entire Japanese class. I was pretty impressed. For a movie that was done in the '80s, it looked like it was made recently. Are any of Miyazaki's other movies worth watching? If they're as good as Totoro was I want to check them out. Cheesy

I tend to be rather skeptical of anime but Miyazaki's stuff is always worth watching. My personal favorites are Princess Mononoke and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.

Last night I saw Doctor Zhivago again for the umpteenth time. But last evening, it was on the big screen in HD. (only $5 admission to each film in a classics series) The colours and detail were amazing - I watched the lack of continuity  Smiley in the stubble on the faces of Omar Sharif and Ralph Richardson during the train journey to the east. I noticed the icons. A surprising one was St Nicholas (?) in Lara's post-revolutionary apartment in Yuriatin (sp?). It seemed odd that it was there especially as Katya was calling the Tsar an "enemy of the people". Great fun. Though I may have annoyed my wife by my speaking many lines before they were heard from the characters Cheesy.

The movie was much better than the reviews it received! I wish it would have left the sensationalism out and stayed strictly to the book however; reality is far more frightening than fantasy. But considering this is Hollywood, I  thought the movie was well done. I do highly recommend reading the book.

Off to see True Grit tonight with some of my family.

I've seen the John Wayne version several times and, when I got to read the book could hear his voice whenever 'Rooster' Coburn is speaking. However they left out some of the discussion about church membership found in the book.

Opinions please

I've been watching a lot of movies lately. Here are some that are worth mentioning:

Catfish
http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1810129583/info

Half Nelson
http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1808746892/details

(^ I stumbled upon both of these at Blockbuster and was very pleasantly surprised. "Half Nelson" was a terrific movie, although I didn't quite understand the title. "Catfish" was also very good, but I can't say too much about it without giving it away. Rent them both!)

Two of Anthony Hopkins's best films that went largely unnoticed:

The World's Fastest Indian
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bu9dGRQvJY

Hearts in Atlantis
http://www.blockbuster.com/browse/catalog/movie/trailer/197012

Bird (Saw this one on cable recently, and I will always remember when I first saw it in the theater. Excellent movie directed by Clint Eastwood, who is an excellent director.)
http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1800036823/info

The King's Speech (I have to say that I was a bit disappointed by this one. It's very good, but not nearly as good as the hype it received. Had it been an underrated film, I think I would give it much more credit; but it was praised so highly that I left disappointed. But it is a generally good film.)
http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1810124453/info

Black Swan (One of the worst mistakes I ever made was taking my wife to see this movie. Even if I had seen this alone, I would have forever regretted it. A terrible movie with absolutely no redemptive value whatsoever.)

The Rite (This movie was much better than I expected it to be, since the reveiws were tepid. But it was well worth watching. I do wish it would have stayed closer to the book, but it didn't deviate to a ridiculous extreme. But by all means, read the book! Reality is far more frightening than fiction!)
http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1810161312/info

Marley and Me (Rented this one that I'd seen before, and bawled like a baby- AGAIN! This really is a great movie, and it stirred my emotions as much as it did the first time I saw it.)

The Stone Reader (This is a fascinating documentary that will appeal to anyone who is a book lover. Very intriguing. A real life mystery full of human drama.)

In the Shadow of the Moon  (I still don't know whether or not anyone has really walked on the moon, but this movie is very convincing. Either way, this is a fascinating documentary that does not disappoint.)

Nixon (Anthony Hopkins was excellent as usual, and this movie was remarkably balanced for an Oliver Stone directed film. Of course it was still a hatchet job, but at least Hopkins portrayed Nixon as a true human being rather than a mere caricature.)

Frost Nixon (A laughable film that is entertaining nonetheless.)

OK, so you can see that I've been watching WAY too many movies lately. But at least 95% of them were worth watching. I hope you get to check some of these out for yourself. Smiley

Black Swan (One of the worst mistakes I ever made was taking my wife to see this movie. Even if I had seen this alone, I would have forever regretted it. A terrible movie with absolutely no redemptive value whatsoever.)

Off to see True Grit tonight with some of my family.

I've seen the John Wayne version several times and, when I got to read the book could hear his voice whenever 'Rooster' Coburn is speaking. However they left out some of the discussion about church membership found in the book.

Opinions please
[/quote
Well I was slightly disappointed. The book and the John Wayne film used language wonderfully. I'm guessing that some people would have spoken in that odd, stilted way. The latest film underplays that I feel.

Also, as with no Country for Old Menthe Coen brothers have slightly messed with the book. Unnecessarily I think.

It's a decent western worth seeing but as much as I like Bridges I don't think this is Oscarworthy.

It was shock value simply for the sake of shock value. Gratuitous sex and violence throughout. Extremely disturbing, but not in a good way. One of those movies that made me feel like I needed to run my brain through a car wash afterwards.

I totally agree, and I can tolerate violent films very well, I'm a huge Tarantino fan. It was very uncomfortable and disturbing. Brilliant acting though.

I cannot wait for the Rite to  hit Australia.

The last film I saw was the Russell Crowe one the Last Three Days. It was not brilliant, but it left you believing in the saying  to the effect 'better to let 10 guilty people go free than find an innocent person guilty.'

The Mission
I spent three years in Paraguay in the 1980s. It does reflect the stories I was told there. It's one of my favourite movies (Iguazú Falls cannot be photographed poorly!). I did visit the falls several times, and did visit some Jesuit ruins. At that time, restoration was just beginning, though I understand a lot of work has been done on them in the last twenty years.

The movie does have its shortcomings. The local natives are not speaking Guaraní; I didn't learn to speak it well, but I did reach the point of getting the main point of a conversation. Also, one major hole in the story: the missionaries had an arduous journey upstream to reach their mission, but the Archbishop comes gliding in peacefully on a barge.

I saw The Rite.  It reminded me why I love Anthony Hopkins as an actor.  It is also a great story.  From a Christian perspective, it is one of the few exorcism movies worth watching.

The movie was much better than the reviews it received! I wish it would have left the sensationalism out and stayed strictly to the book however; reality is far more frightening than fantasy. But considering this is Hollywood, I  thought the movie was well done. I do highly recommend reading the book.

Selam

I might have to take you up on this recommendation.

Also, I just got done watching Platoon for the first time, start to finish.  Next up Hamburger Hill.
