Somehow the wife wanted to watch Downfall with me yesterday and we sat through the whole thing.

I like that movie.
Happy shall he be, that shall take and dash thy little ones against the rock. Alleluia.

Get Out - Had high expectations going in, and it lived up to them.

Arrival - Had high expectations for this one as well, though it didn't quite live up to them. Still enjoyed it though.

I finally saw Silence.  I don't want to give too much away for those who haven't seen it yet, but man, was it depressing.

Is it worth watching?

Yes, definitely.  Scorcese does a great job directing and Issey Ogata is phenomenal.  Every scene he's in he steals the show.  The rest of cast is solid too, especially Adam Driver.  The story is based upon a semi-historical novel by Japanese Catholic author Shusaku Endo, and it at once speaks to the depth of the Christian faith while simultaneously taking the mickey out of the would-be missionaries for their hubris and failure to truly understand (and wash the feet of) the people they were serving.

I've really been wanting to see this. I don't think it even came to the theaters here in Mississippi.

It's available for rental through most outlets now.  Do a quick search, and let me know when you want to compare notes.  :)

Will do.  Thanks!

Hey my friend. Yes, I saw the movie and loved it. I started a thread about it a few weeks ago. Some very differing opinions on it.

New Ghost in the Shell movie.  I liked the cast, and it was diverting.  Some scenes were cool.  I liked the animated movie better though, which I saw for the first time several weeks ago.

I tried watching John Woo's Red Cliff, after seeing praise heaped on it from all corners, and made it about halfway. Yes, the scenery is beautiful and the sets and costumes are top notch. But the characters are hokey and cartoonish, even for a monumental epic film. The dialogue and, at times, the cinematography is super-pretentious. The battle sequences are incoherent and the allegedly brilliant tactics deployed would only work on a buffoon- certainly not the genius Cao Cao is cracked up to be.  As far as arty, expensive Chinese  martial arts epics go, Zhang Yimou is a much more capable hand. I think John Woo should go back to ultra-violent gangster thrillers.

O strange Orthodox Church, so poor and weak, with neither the organization nor the culture of the West, staying afloat as if by a miracle in the face of so many trials, tribulations and struggles; a Church of contrasts, both so traditional and so free, so archaic and so alive, so ritualist and so personally involved, a Church where the priceless pearl of the Gospel is assiduously preserved, sometimes under a layer of dust; a Church which in shadows and silence maintains above all the eternal val

Just took the nieces/nephews to see "Valerian".  I had such high hopes.  The previews were so colorful and vivid.

Don't waste your money.  The previews showed the best moments of the entire OVER TWO HOUR movie!

It was too long...and the acting was subpar.

Kinda let down by the options for movies/tv with Amazon Prime. Watched last night and tonight...

RiffTrax: No Retreat, No Surrender
RiffTrax: Cool as Ice

Though most of the 90s jokes in the Vanilla Ice movie were fun.

Last night I watched Tokyo Drifter again (love it) and saw Tarkovsky's Stalker for the first time in Blu-Ray (had a crappy copy on DVD).

I still don't know what to make of it, especially the ending of that movie but I keep thinking about it. Lovely blu-ray transfer for a film that has gorgeous photography throughout.

I see the characters as:

Stalker - the religious mystic
Writer - the worldly cynic
Professor - the rational observer

All of them have a different pursuit and understanding of truth.

But I don't know who the Stalker's daughter is at the end of the movie.

Watching Rogue One with my son.  Once you get rid of your expectations for this being a movie in the Star Wars franchise, it actually becomes watchable and fairly enjoyable.  My five year old really likes it.

I liked its aesthetics, kind of a lot,  I wish more big budget features would utilize less cgi. The story was OK, not as good as the hype, but way better than episode 7 and still watchable considering the lack of imagination and originality in big budget hollywood movies anymore.

What were your impressions vs. the series?  Much darker, right?  No Frost.  No network input.  Just Lynch being Lynch.  And Sheryl Lee's performance was spectacular, right?  Very nuanced.

I liked it and thought it served well as a transition piece (in more ways than one) if you're going from the original series to The Return. I liked the darker elements of it a lot, and I could see where Lynch was going in bringing the focus of the story back to Laura. That was one heck of a performance by Sheryl Lee.

Have you seen the deleted scenes?  How do you think they're going to resolve the Phillip Jeffries issue since Bowie's passed away?  Recast, like they did with Donna in FWWM?

Disappointing. It got a high rating on Rotten Tomatoes. An important true story that was poorly told. The acting was subpar. Way too long. Packed with clichés. Frustrating.

Just watched No Country for Old Men for the second time.  One of my favorites.

I need to finally sit down and watch that.

Detroit

Disappointing. It got a high rating on Rotten Tomatoes. An important true story that was poorly told. The acting was subpar. Way too long. Packed with clichés. Frustrating.

Selam
Saw it too. Great propaganda value, so to reach the greatest group cliches are used as it cuts down on thinking.  But it was well done for the effect and passions it was attempting to invoke.
A real tragedy that occurred, Hollywood not withstanding.

Not for you smart folks as it is a movie, not a film.
Entertaining and well done + enjoyable.

Do you need someone from oc.net to come over there with the DVD and popcorn to make you watch it? What are you waiting for?   ;D

I can't believe it took them 25 years to put out the Studio Ghibli film Only Yesterday on DVD in the USA, but they finally did.
Quote from: Nun M.
The dread Pantocrator...is also "Christouli mou", (my little Christ), who really listens when you run in to your neighborhood church on the way to work to cry and light a candle because your daughter is in trouble at school. The untouchable and all-holy Mother of God is also "Panayitsa mou", who really will take your part before the court of heaven because, just like your own mom, she’ll always stick up for her children, no matter how badly they’ve behaved.
