Coraline.  A good amount of creepiness.

It's brilliant. One of the few kiddie scaries that actually scared the young one.

It even creeped me out.

Gaiman be awesome like that.

I hated that book. And I read it when I was 15 or something.

Mata Hari, Greta Garbo.  An Icon of The Virgin Mary plays a key dramatic role in the movie.

Manson Family Vacation

To avoid spoilers, let me just say that this is an interesting film that is not what you would expect. I liked it.

I DVRed "Risen" this weekend and finally got to see it.  I didn't think it was much to write home about, but it was interesting on several fronts.  Here are a couple of observations:
1)  The Jesus in this movie was different than in other depictions and I liked that.  To see him laughing and talking with his disciples as if he were just "one of the guys", I thought, was something that was lacking in other portrayals.  I also thought that the eyes of this Jesus, especially the lifeless eyes as he is looking on Joseph Fiennes gave me the creeps.
2)  The ROmans are almost always portrayed negatively and this film tried to maybe rehabilitate that bad reputation at least a little.

Enjoyable.

Rifftrax: Kingdom of the Spiders

1977 film starring William Shatner. Some lulz. One bizarre scene in which the female lead turns down Shatner for like the 3rd time, so while ignoring her protestations Shatner scoops her up, sets her down inside her convertible, and then gets in himself and drives her to a restaurant.

I know a lot of Irish Catholics.  I can happily say I've met priests like him before.  I bet priests like that make many Irish women unhappy, as he is off the market.  But isn't Bells of St Mary's the one you are supposed to watch at Xmas?  That might be a top 5 Christmas movie.

I believe Turner Classic Movies did a special of religious themed movies yesterday- they showed  Bells of St. Mary's during the day and Song of Bernadette followed by Going My Way in the evening.

Good.  I'll veg out on TCM movies when I head to my home town this week.  That's kind of my norm when I go back home to visit.  My mom has TCM and I always watch it when I go over there.

TFA is exact reason why I am extremely skeptical of Blade Runner 2049. Although the teaser trailer looks promising...

That's the problem with sequels to films decades later they are too derivative of the original.

There was a time when people who wrote scripts actually read books too. Nowadays I get the frightening feeling that scriptwriters just watch other movies and TV. I definitely get that feeling with JJ Abrams, whether he's doing Star Wars, Star Trek, or whatever other nonsense. In 1960's Star Trek (and, to some extent, TNG) you would get references to Milton, Shakespeare, etc. I highly doubt Abrams or his writers have read enough of any of these to comfortably quote them, let alone learn from them.

Which is why none of those reboots are edifying. The Abrams Star Trek is like Mission Impossible in space with an overuse of lens flare. He's a hack.

Just watched Sinister 2. As usual, the first one was better, but this sequel was on par and the church massacre scene is probably one of the tensest ones I've ever seen.

Worse.

Quite the accomplishment, if true.

As terrible as it was, at least it added something. That said, Darth Vader with Child Anakin's Voice for your giggling pleasure.

That's ominous. Explain why I shouldn't waste three hours of my lifespan on Kingdom of Heaven?

It's not historically accurate (surprise!). Still an absolutely beautiful piece of cinema, though, with one of the best soundtracks ever composed.

I intend to see it.  The preview reminded me a bit of another movie about the Jesuits I enjoyed: Black Robe.  I'd love to see a well-produced missionary flick about St. Herman, St. Innocent, Ss. Cyril & Methodius, or St. Frumentius.
I'm with the camp of 13 million Americans that believe politicians are, or are controlled by, Reptilians. I think only monks can solve this problem. It doesn't seem right that they prefer to ignore it.

Black Robe was great. Saw that in a colonial America history class.

Scorsese is hit or miss with me but Silence looks worthwhile. Also I've just been reading in-depth about Jesuit missions in Asia so my interest is extra-piqued.

Two words: Lego Batman!
or maybe that's actually 5 words: The Lego Bat-Man Movie!
(ok, I am possibly a bit old for that...tough noogies  ::) )
(also, hopefully all the best parts aren't already in the 2,595,309,549,684,342,893 trailers on Youtube already)

I was going to watch Saw II and Kingdom of Heaven, but at this rate that's not going to happen.

Don't waste your time with Kingdom of Heaven.

That's ominous. Explain why I shouldn't waste three hours of my lifespan on Kingdom of Heaven?

It's not historically accurate (surprise!). Still an absolutely beautiful piece of cinema, though, with one of the best soundtracks ever composed.

Are you kidding?  Yes, the historical inaccuracies (and that's putting it nicely; it's really historical revisionism) are bad and not really necessary for telling a good story, but the characters are 2 dimensional, the soundtrack is meh and the portrayal of Christians as nothing more than hypocrites and intolerant while the portrayal of their Muslim counterparts is sympathetic makes this more of a propaganda film than a pseudo-historical epic.

No, I'm not kidding. Some of the theatrical version's headscratching moments are resolved in the director's cut. I'm used to Hollywood mangling the history of my people, so by now I put entertainment value above educational. If I want to learn more about X or Y bit of history after watching this or any other film, I'll go get some books. As entertainment, it was glorious and I'd watch it again whenever given a chance. You didn't enjoy it, so you can continue to abstain. No worries either way.

I haven't watched the movie, but I will say this:
While I believe that modern scholars' sympathy for Saladin and demonization of King Richard are a bit biased and unfair, the distinction between the way Richard treated his hostages and the way Saladin did cannot be ignored.

A Christmas Carol starring George C. Scott.  Recently I read the book, so I rented the film.
