To all members of OC.net
« on: October 20, 2009, 08:03:22 PM »
Glory be to God on high!

On Sunday, October 18, I was received by Chrismation into the Holy Orthodox Catholic Church!  As unworthy and humbled as I be, it couldn't had been done without a lot of people God brought me to.  Some of those people are certainly here on OC.net.  From the time I was about 17 (21 now), I have been able to rely on this site and its members for questions that would come up in the middle of the night and get a response by morning.  In addition to that, to have been prayed for by all of you has been a tremendous help and blessing.  I really just wanted to take this opportunity to express my sincerest thanks to all and know you will be in my prayers and I ask for yours!  God bless you all!

P.S.  As I will never really stop being a catechumen, expect more questions and hopefully one day I will know enough to answer some tough ones to!

Your brother in Christ,

Ian

Oh..wanted to get your thoughts on something I realized following the Divine Liturgy...I think it's pretty awesome myself...

So, I belong to the Antiochian jurisdiction, the cross I wear has the blue ivory(I think that's what the blue is?) which is Greek in origin, and my Chrismation name is Seraphim of Sarov (I took Ian as well since it is my given first name)..so I have a little bit of everything Orthodox with me!!  I thought it was pretty cool haha...your thoughts?

Glory to God!

I pray that the fire of love will never grow cold. As you bathe in the joy of your Chrismation, prepare yourself for trials and hardships. I myself, as a convert to Orthodoxy, have experienced tremendous hardships and spiritual attacks since I was baptized. I recognize it for what it is, a satanic attempt to discourage me and keep me impotent in the spiritual warfare to which all Christian are called to fight. So remember your new name, your Chrismation, and the mystical feelings of joy that you have right now. Feelings come and go, circumstances change, and our lives tend to ebb and flow in righteousness and success over sin and sorrow. But Our Lord and His Church shall never be defeated, and thus in nearness to Him and faithful participation in the Church we shall eternally prevail.

I just finished a wonderful book by Michael Gallatin called Thirsting for God in a Land of Shallow Wells. In it he writes:

"Let me be very candid. A Protestant who chooses to join himself to the ancient Church and its sacramental way will ind himself encountering spiritual conflicts and struggles of a magnitude he's never faced before. To walk the sacramental path is to live every day in a Kingdom that is "not of this world" (John 18:36). From experience, I can tell you that a serious Orthodox Christian finds himself at odds with this sinful world, and with the sinful blackness of his own heart, to a depth and intensity unknown to most Protestant believers. Tears are his fearful companion. But through his sacramental life of struggle, he also comes to know unimaginable grace, overwhelming peace, inexpressible joy, indescribable love- and true victory." [p. 92]

Peace to you my friend!
