I have read a great deal by Tolstoy including his philosophical and religious works as well as several biographies. From what I've read, he was a restless man who was tormented by numerous demons that he couldn't put to rest. In some ways, he was constantly wrestling with himself and God because he wanted everything to be absolutely perfect. As far as his writings are concerned, I have always found that his literary works (Anna Karenina, various short stories, Resurrection) are enlightening and shine a profound light on the human condition. However, he is nowhere near Dostoyevsky or Solzhenitsyn (my favorite Russian authors).

I think he should be a saint and that his excomunication was done fraudulently and was not a decision led by the Holy Spirit but by politicians
I find it incredible that they feared a pacifist vegan who preached denial of riches and power so that we could all spend more time loving Christ.

I thought he denied the church totally and completely, as well as the sacraments. I am not passing judgement, I am just stating What I have read on an article that a lady here posted a link to. Therefore, how could he be a saint? On the other hand I totally agree with you.
