Has anybody here read "The Imitation of Christ" by Thomas a Kempis?
As a Roman Catholic, it is one of my favorite books. I keep coming back to it.
What is the Orthodox reaction to this book? And is there a comparable EOx book?

I've read only small parts, but from what I've read, I liked it a lot. I definitely want to read it in its entirety one day.

It's a good book, really makes you think.
Anyway, the comparable book is ladder of divine ascent by st john climacus.
definitely worth a perusal

Bobby - spot on.
I read 'The Ladder' during Great Lent this year - and yes having read both 'The Ladder' is the Eastern equivalent.
Can't actually reccommend either of them too highly

Imitation of Christ is the second best selling book in the world. Second to the bible. It's not just popular with Catholics, protestants enjoy it as well. I read it every other year.

Correct Mor and Br Max It's that language problem again  Both books are excellent - and yes there is a certain similarity between them. The Ladder is earmaked for Great Lent again this year - 1 Chapter a day along with Schmemann's Great Lent. |

another book that works well with Imitation of Christ is LITTLE FLOWERS OF ST FRANCIS. NOW that is a life changing book. |

I've been reading this for the past year with my prayer/spiritual study group... we read one chapter per week, and throughout the week we re-read it each morning and night, and journal about how it affects our daily lives.
It's really great... never pulls a punch! My favorite passage from this week's chapter:
"But what great matter is it if thou, who art but dust and a mere nothing, submit thyself for God's sake to man, when I, the Almighty and the Most High, who created all things out of nothing, have for thy sake humbly subjected Myself to man?"
Ooof!
We're planning to do "The Ladder" next.

Imitation of Christ is one of the few books I've truely meditated on. This I did before my conversion to Orthodoxy. As a mere common man, one's way of honoring someone is to name a pet after that person I named my Collie "Kemp"

Hello to all you Imitation fans. I just got another book by Ven Thomas a Kempis. The book is entitled "Consolations for My Soul" published by Crossroad. It's a translation of Ven Thomas' "Soliloquium Animae" done by William Griffin. Sorry to all you purists but it's a contemporary translation. Hey at least it's in English! It's pretty good so far. Apparently Thomas wrote it for those who've gotten through the Imitation.
