I am not British, but I absolutely adore British accents of English language. Sorry Americans, you just can't compete with them. :police:

I think there is no shame in admitting to the truth: we Americans cannot compete with their accents. True, Americans do have a superior understanding of vocabulary and spelling... yet in oral discussions this is hardly helpful.

As for Glasgow:
Heard? Maybe.

I actually love it, but it's not all strolls through the Peak District.

Then again, most people who visit London don't make it to places like South Bermondsey (home of Millwall FC) either.

I am not British, but I love the traditional music, and am grateful for its enduring legacy across a wide range of US music

today's music from Leeds:

From Pacific NW USA:

Some of those young men are Norwegian diaspora, and nearly right out of high school.

Wish they would get to a chanter's stand.

Well, being Scots-Irish, I have no reason to have any love for the Brits, but with that said...

Scots and Northern Irish are Brits.

Not sure what I was thinking, but my first reply to this comment was some sort of weird tangent.  Sorry.  Though Scots and Northern Irish are Brits, Scots-Irish are not typically thought as such.  If GiC had said 'Ulster Scots', then Riddikulus' comment would have been correct as  'Scots-Irish' almost always refers to Americans whose ancestors came from Ireland by way of Scotland.  'Ulster Scots' are Irish living in Northern Ireland and Donegal whose ancestors came from Scotland.  So, I guess y'all could say that 'Scots-Irish' used to be 'Ulster Scots'.

Well, it varies. They have ones with raisin and caramel and wafers, and crumbly ones, and ones with bubbles in the chocolate... mmmm. They tend to be a lot creamier than U.S. bars.

I get them at the supermarket sometimes. There's a Sweetbay near me which has some of them. Also, there's a U.K. goods store in Tampa, about a half hour away from me. They have tons. MMMMmmmmm. :)

My name at birth was Signe.  I wanted to change my moniker here, and the moderators were kind enough to change it, so I changed to velsigne.  I am American, second generation on one side, from Arendal.

Where do you live?  You don't have to say if you don't want to or you can pm me.  You have a Nordic saint's name though, no?

Yes, I thought it would be a good idea because of Abraham.

Ah, Denmark!  My godmother lived there for a time as a student, and she is fluent.  She said it wasn't too hard to learn and she really liked it there.  Every year at Christmas I want to go there for some strange reason.

Did you see the documentary about the old man who wanted to donate his house to make it a monastery in Denmark?  It shows the Russian Orthodox nuns coming to try and fix up the house.  It's really wonderful, partly because the man has to overcome so much in himself to do that one thing.  I wonder if the monastery is still there?   I'm pretty sure that was Denmark, hmmm.

I have to get going right now, and I can't recall the name of it.  Maybe it will come to me later.

I have heard rumors that the nuns have moved back to Russia due to financial problems, but I can't confirm anything. I hope it's only rumors.

:D Most of them I liked even before I moved to the UK. I'm an old-school goth with a degree in English, after all. Some, like pubs and curry, I learned to love here. (I'm on the fence on fish and chips, but then I'm picky. Not every corner chippy is up to Magpie standards!) And there are still several cultural staples that I loathe, but that's for another thread. ;)

And there are still several cultural staples that I loathe

The true test of Britishness is whether you actually enjoy baked beans.

I do, but they have to be Heinz. Bring in the own-brand stuff, and the ball is dropped instantly.

My so-English-it's-ridiculous husband hates them. What's the verdict?

My priest (Who is English) was very happy to find Heinz Baked Beans at World Market here in town.  That will be one less product they have to buy from Amazon UK.  He said the English baked beans have less sugar than American baked beans.

I'm not a Brit either (I just live here), but I can definitely appreciate tea, pubs, BBC-produced costume dramas and police thrillers, kiddie TV in general, QI, Blackadder and Robin of Sherwood, anything Cadbury, green belts, curry places on every corner, Shakespeare, gothic literature (both classical and neo-gothic) and the goth subculture in general, the Royal Ballet, Strictly Come Dancing, castles and mansions all over the place... the list goes on. ;D

I'm with you on just about everything but the tea (can't stand the stuff I'm afraid) and the goth subculture. Like you I'm not a Brit, though I've lived here most of my life. I do find myself getting suspiciously proud of God's own county, though, so I think I'm a sort of non-English Yorkshireman. To your list I'd definitely have to add both Yorkshire pudding and parkin (not that substandard Lancastrian cake that shares its name), and Blake's 7 - the special effects may have been poor (I swear I remember them re-using a Vosene bottle as a gun) but that aside the series was brilliant. Paul Darrow's character Avon remains one of my favourite characters from any SF series.
