Services when no Priest is present for holidays.
« on: August 19, 2009, 02:56:18 AM »
Since I currently have no Priest on Sundays I do the Typika and such but what I am wondering is are there any links someone could guide me too that have services/readings that a layman can do when no Priest is present for the Holidays like Christmas etc.

Vlad, if you wish to do the services for yourself, such as Vespers and Matins, you need a couple of things.

1)  Menaion, which contain all the hymns for the day for Vespers, Matins and Divine Liturgy.  Unfortunately, these are expenseive.  The 12 volume set costs $1000 from HTM.

2)  Great Horologion, which has the structures of the services.

3)  Since you are alone, you cannot do everything prescribed in the HOrologion, I would recommend you visit Bishop BASIL's website of DOWAMA.  He has a section on services when a priest is not present.  http://www.dowama.org/node/26

HOpe this helps.
Hey, I don't hand out 9.5s to just anyone!  ;D

The Antiochian LA diocese website puts up the texts for the major feasts:

http://www.antiochianladiocese.org/service_texts.html

You can use that and just do it "reader's style" by replacing the priests' blessings with "Through the Prayers of our Holy Fathers, Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us" and the Litanies with Lord Have Mercy's (12 for long ones, 3 for short).

Past posts reflect stages of my life before my baptism and may not be accurate expositions of Orthodox teaching. Also, I served as an Orthodox priest from 2008-2013, before resigning.
