Dear folks, could you please say a quick prayer for my wife (Lesya, Alexandra) and me, so that we could be strangthened? About 2 months ago, we sent a paper to a journal, and this morning Lesya received a letter saying that the paper was rejected flatly, with no suggestions to revise. Sad, because last year, that same journal accepted our previous work, and we sincerely thought that this follow-up is actually a better study, more interesting... Anonymous peer review is such an unpredictable thing. Anyway, thank you!

I used to work for a doctor who edited a peer-reviewed immunology journal.  I hated typing up the rejection letters.

Lord, have mercy.

Heorhij and Lesia,

Don't take these things personally.  They probably didn't even bother reading it.

Can you resubmit it next year?  Maybe someone else will be the reviewer.

I am sure if that paper expressed such sound judgment and research, as you have shown on this board, it was worthy of getting published.

I'm sorry it didn't get the credit it was due.

Lord, have mercy!

I was sorry to hear that your paper was rejected, but you did not mention the subject matter of the paper. Recently, there has been set up an alternative site to arxiv, because of complaints that papers were unfairly rejected at arxiv. The new site of eprints in science and mathematics is called vixra.org. It accepts all  papers in the fields of science and mathematics. .  You might be interested in a paper giving an overview of the peer review process complete with examples of misjudgement and unfair rejections of scientific manuscripts, together with proposals for improving the refereeing process.

How to Reject any Scientific Manuscript

Thank you, Stanley. The subject was proteome analysis of immune cells (called "monocytes") of dairy cattle infected with a virus. (Mississippi is a very "cattle-oriented" state...) Our previous communication was on proteins that act as enzymes ("kinases") or kinase receptors. This one was about proteins acting as membrane ion channels and transporters. Two of my students worked on it, and one former Lesya's graduate student. There was also a collaborator from the UK (U. of Manchester). We found so many interesting differences in the expression of these proteins in virus-infected cells vs. non-infected. Our first paper was accepted after some struggle with the reviewers, but this time around it's just a plain bold "no," without specific comments or even questions. The reviewers just did not like it, period. We will never know why.

We will perhaps send it to another journal, less prestigeous, lower rated...

Thank you all for the prayers though, and for reading my "venting."  Grin

Sorry to hear that.  I know that writing a paper is like having a child.

This is just a guess, but there may be a problem in the interpretation of proteomic data. According to the following paper:  “the degree of stringency required in proteomic data generation and analysis appears to have been underestimated. As a result, there are likely to be numerous published findings that are of questionable quality, requiring further confirmation and/or validation.”

Heorhij,

Been there, done that!  In my profession, it's difficult to get papers published.  I've been lucky to get two of mine in, but the rest have been flatly rejected without any comments to revise as well.  good luck.

Lord have mercy.

Thank you again, Stanley. Yes, this is all true. We tried to confirm our proteomics data by Westerns, but, you know, it's cattle... not all that many specific anti-bovine antibodies on the market or even in laboratories. We did some Westerns, just to show concordance. Nah. Not convincing...

Again, folks, thank you for the prayers - Lesya and I feel better already!

As a struggling writer myself I understand your frustration. It is especially difficult when you labor to write something that you believe will be of benefit to humanity and bring glory to God- which sounds like what you are trying to do with your important research and findings. Keep up the good work, and commit all your plans to the Lord. He is control, and in His perfect time your work will bear fruit. I have to remind myself of this as well.
