Marian Apparitions
« on: July 30, 2009, 11:08:13 PM »
Does the OC recognize any Marian apparitions and if so, what is the gist of the messages received from the apparitions?

Thank you and God bless.

Check out the apparitions tag I added at the bottom, it has a bunch of threads linked.

Would the Pokrov/Skepe be considered an apparition?  ???

An interesting thought popped to mind in light of the things posted (including the linked article above) thusfar:
In genuine Orthodox icons of the Protection the Theotokos Christ is always somewhere on the icon.  In some (but not all) uniate or uniate-inspired icons she is absent (the uniate inspired part, of course, is why we find the "Christless pokrov" icons in some of our churches that came back over from uniatism).  The article above mentioned skepticism because of Christ's absence and her being the messenger.   Her being the messenger I am not sure flies, given that angels are messengers and she is far "more honorable than the cherubim and more glorious beyond compare than the seraphim."  But her being the messenger of a wrong message certainly would indicate it is not her delivering the message, it is an imposter, since it must simply affirm and confirm "the faith delivered once for all to the saints."

Yes. This is exactly the kind of criteria the Catholic church uses to determine whether an apparition can be accepted. There are of course other criteria as well.

This is why I asked this question. If the CC apparitions are real, then what are the messages and how do the compare against the messages of the OC apparitions? Does the Blessed Mother address any particular church in any of her messages or does she simply refer to "the Church", "the nishops", "the priests", and etc?

Actually, we have many instances of "apparitions" in the Church.   St. Romanos the melodist, for example, when the Theotokos appeared to him and told him to "take the scroll and eat it."

Isn't there a footprint of the Theotokos on a rock in one of the monasteries in Ukraine where she appeared?  Is it Pochaev?

Orthodoc,

That is truly incredible information provided in your link!  Coming from Roman Catholicism (former seminarian here), I always had questions regarding the Catholic (Marian) apparitions.  In that link the most logical line of thinking is provided and gives great explanations with the political and economic factors.  Thank you very much, Orthodoc!  It certainly put a big question in my mind to rest.
