Rapping red Easter eggs
« on: April 29, 2009, 10:10:15 AM »
I've watched some Orthodox music videos in which two people rap red Easter eggs against each other and then look at the eggs. They seem to do it the same way every time.

Is this Orthodox rap music (pun fully intended and set up)?

It is a Greek custom at Easter for people to tap each others' coloured, boiled eggs, and call out "Khristos Anesti!" (Christ is Risen!) as the eggs hit. It's a centuries' old folk custom, but one which does have a proper symbolism: the breaking of the eggshell is a metaphor for the opening of the sealed tomb of Christ. What happens to the broken egg varies, depending on what local or family tradition prevails: sometimes, the winner (the one with the unbroken egg) is entitled to take and eat the broken egg of his "opponent", sometimes it's the "loser" who has to eat his egg, while the "winner" can bask in the glory of his egg remaining intact.

One of our choir members did this on Pascha with the other catechumen saying that the person whose egg did not break would have good luck for the rest of the year.

He won. :)

Never heard of that spin on it.

He won. :)

Probably had an "enhanced" egg... wooden plates or something.

You can also blow away the egg through the tiny holes on the opposite sides of the shell and put molten wax to the inside using syringe. If you do it properly the egg won't crack :)

The same in mine.

In my grandfather's village there was a real league of egg-cracking. Oddly adults took part in it. Pro gamers had special ways to check which egg had the hardest shell (trying on teeth and similar...)

He said it was because he's an engineer by trade and automatically knew which side of the egg was more structurally sound.

We do the same thing...just keep your eyes open and make sure that your "opponent" isn't jabbing your egg with the pointy end of his, to the dull end of yours....

They can be veeeeeery sneaky.....

...others try to "protect" their egg by hiding most of it in their hand.

But, it's all in the name of fun!  You have to crack the egg to eat it, so, why not make a game out of it?
..just remember to bury the shells if the eggs were blessed and not toss them in the trash!

That's precisely why, in my family, the contest is between alike ends (pointy with pointy, followed by rounded with rounded; pointy vs. rounded only occurs as a tiebreaker, or if your egg has won a tiebreaker and you continue to fight with just one uncracked end).

That's how we've always done it in our family.

And we always followed the winner take-all-method with the intact egg holder getting loser's egg.

Sounds like fun.

Do you dye eggs colors besides red, hide eggs and have Easter egg hunts, or have an Easter bunny myth? And chocolate by the ton?
