Please pray for my 18 year old son. He states that upon going to college, he will never go to Divine Liturgy/Holy Communion again. He actively participated in the Church since his Baptism/Chrismation.

Lord, have mercy!
Ms. Hoorah, I feel for you. My 24-year old daughter, a cradle Orthodox, is a very staunch, militant atheist, and God knows how much I want her to return to the Church. But we can only do so much, may the Lord help us all...

I believe I once said something like this when I was at college. 6 years or so later, I was back in the pews, so to speak.

Lord, have mercy! ms. hoorah, when I was his age, I too, left the church (Assemblies of God back then) for Islam for almost 10 years, then atheism. Now, as Schultz said, I try to darken the steps to my parish as often as I can. BTW, welcome to the forum!

Kyrie Eleison.
Does he say why he doesn't want to go to Divine Liturgy/communion ever again? He states, "Church is worthless." I point out to him all the wonderful gifts that God has provided for him, the necessity of thanking God, our NEED for God in our sinful lives and all society. He, in all of his infinite, 18 year old wisdom, has decided to attempt to "scientifically" evaluate whether God exists. Where did all of the spiritual education from his parents', Godparents', priests, Sunday school, and church go? I don't want to physically prove God exists. I do not know if that is even possible or desired.?? Both my priest (a wonderful, helpful, caring person) and my adopted Godmother (very spiritually wise) state that my son may need to "briefly reject his family's religious beliefs to then be able to make accept Orthodoxy as his beliefs. He is going to Penn State (Univ. Park) in August. I am going to contact the priest and visit the church (hopefully with my son) this summer. Thank you for your prayers. {Edit - fixed your quote tags - Cleveland, GM}

They are a bit older than your son, she 24 1/2 and he 28, and yet they still remain in this acutely negative "all religion is stupid and all this 'god-talk' is worthless" phase. They are wonderful kids, with great drive for work, family, generally everything positive and productive; and they both have very strict moral codes, and they both are very kind and compassionate. Yet, whatever "religilous" (B. Maher) they hear about, they reject it flatly. They are extremely entrenched in the opinion that nothing exists beyond physical, natural, empirically knowable, "scientifically testable." I have no idea why so many people are like this, and why I am not... but I'll pray for them and for you.

I would suggest the arguement he presents in his Summa Contra Gentiles to be the best as it is the most detailed and well defended version.
