I need an advice
« on: April 04, 2009, 03:24:47 PM »
Hello!
I'm new here. I've been browsing tons of forums for an idea of what to do. I was laid off from my job about 3 month ago. I've been looking for a job since then, but did not even get a single interview. I worked as a web designer for a publishing company for the last 5 years. Looks like www.orthodoxchristianity.net is an active forum with active members and may be someone has some experience working as a freelance web designer. May be "Convert Issues" category is not the most appropriate for this question, but I want to try anyways to get some opinions before I go ahead with my life. I'm wondering if it is possible in the current economy to find work for a freelance web designer and make enough to pay for rent and groceries. I was able to find a small project on craigslist and I developed a website for a company. It was a small project and took me only a week to complete. I got paid $800 for 1 week of work which is not bad. Please people give me some ideas. I have 2 kids and my wife is out of work as well. Thank you in advance.

All the people I know who do freelance webdesign do it as "something on the side"- in other words, it is not their sole source of income. They tell me it can be quite lucrative, only that the work is unreliable.
If you're living a happy life as a Christian, you're doing something wrong.

I've dabbled with web design, and my 2 cents is that if you want to make it into a full-time thing you really have to hustle.  Site design is easier than ever to do, and there are a ton of qualified people competing for jobs.  I don't say this to discourage you, but to give you one person's perspective.  In any event, best of luck to you!

Welcome to the forum, proolaWab

You do understand that we discuss topics pertaining to the practice of Orthodox Christianity in this forum.

As others have mentioned, I never met anyone who was a full-time web designer; Most people are graphics designers, database administrators and other occupations freelancing as web designers or even the other way around.

Focus on finding any job to support your wife and family and then solicit for web design.

I'm kinda dabbling in back-end web design myself, but only because I need to gain some experience with it to be taken seriously as a software developer nowadays.  It sounds as if you're doing front-end design, which is more graphic design and less programming than what I'm studying, so take my words for what they're worth to you.
