Arrythmia...
« on: March 31, 2009, 11:07:00 AM »
Dear folks,

May I ask a quick prayer for me, as I began to experience weird irregularities in the heartbeat? About 6-7 months ago, my heart began to do some strange numbers on me. :) Sometimes, "out of the blue," I feel my heart leaping in my chest. It can begin in the middle of a workday, or at night, like yesterday night (and then it's pretty scary).

I will go see our college RN next week, but I am not sure that will help any, because in between these fits of arrythmia, I am perfectly healthy.:) Anyway, I believe in the power of your prayers.

G.

Lord, have mercy!

I know what you're feeling, George.  I had similar issues about a year ago.

That's bad luck but it is normal for adults to have small bouts of arrythmia.  I know they can be frightening but they are very rarely life threatening.    All the same they are warnings to be as healthy as possible with food and adequate exercise, stress reduction and possibly a mild form of blood thinner.

There are also "wild" forms of arrythmia called "lone atrial fibrillation" and these forms just appear out of nowhere and no reason is discernable.   I've had this latter form for 6 years.  It's a bit of a nuisance but provided you take care to minimise its impact in your life you can live with it.  My trouble is that I have complications with cardiomyopathy and a low ejection fraction, so that's a misery.

Anyway it sounds as if your arrythmia is simply one of the things which can happen to a healthy adult from time to time and may never repeat itself.   It's not a sign of heart disease nor any need to worry that your life is coming to an end.   I am sure your RN will set your mind to rest.

Be of good cheer!  Offering my prayers and asking for yours,
Fr Ambrose

May the Lord have mercy on His Servant!

We all have been under a lot of stress, Heorhij, so I think it's a good idea to visit the school RN but that it would also be a good idea to see a doctor, get a physical, and find out if this is something that needs to be looked at. If it's nothing, then you have that confirmed; if it is something, then you taken aggressive steps to manage this situation.

Heorhij,

I have had fast heart beat issues, or the feeling that my heart suddenly changes gear for twenty years. Definitely go and have everything checked out with a cardiologist. If they can't find anything wrong, reduce or eliminate caffeine and decongestants. Both can effect your heart rate. I have found that by standing up then reaching down and touching my toes I am able to get my heart to click back in to a regular, slower beat. Sometimes coughing can do the same thing.  If life has been stressful for you lately try deep breathing exercises to help you relax when you feel your heart may begin to beat irregularly. Breathe in deeply enough to fill your belly with air then slowly exhale. Repeat this over and over again until you feel your muscles begin to relax. I hope you find out the reason for your arrhythmia's, they are fairly common. Feel free to pm.

May God have mercy on you!

Many thanks for your prayers and advice. Father Chris, yes, you are right, I must see a physician and I will do it when this crazy semester ends. :) Tamara, thank you for the breathing tips!

Lord, have mercy.

Eat healthy, find time to relax, and do some walking.  It is a crazy semester after all.

Heorhij,

The semester is almost done!  How are you holding up?  How is the arrythmia?  I had this same problem and mine was related to stress.  Tamara has excellent suggestions, which are the same as my doctor recommended to me.  Fr. Chris is absolutely right...see a physician.
