The Teddy Afro rendition of an Ethiopian Orthodox mezmur was referred to in the OO Music thread. I have been listening to it quite a bit as of late and it's been a source of much comfort and consolation to me. I discovered a youtube version of it today which provides the lyrics, albeit not in english. Would one of our Ethiopian Orthodox members please kindly translate the mezmur for me. It would really mean alot.

Link to version with lyrics (they are displayed during the clip):

Dear EkhristosAnesti,

Selam! The words are a lot. If you give me the translation of Ibrahim Ayad's MY CHURCH, I will gladly tell you what T. Afro sung about...

I'm only kidding...give me some time to write it down, if someone doesn't do it before.

Take care and I'll try to post it sooner than later.

Dear EkhristosAnesti,

I will hold you to this Grin There are a few spiritual songs in praise and commemoration of the Church so I am not sure which one you are referring to: a) Kanesty, Kanesty b) Kanesat el-Kepteya, c) Kanesati Argo-laki. Here is a rough translation of the lyrics for c):

My Church, I wish for you;
God's many riches;
Salvation for the world
O our ship of refuge.

O Lord, look down;
Keep watch over us from heaven above;
Tend to to this vine;
Provide growth and prosperity.

My Church, I beseech God;
To fulfill all His Promises to you;
And may the Pantocrator
Fill and replenish you with peace.

3. I pray that God provide you comfort;
in your spacious palaces;
For my brothers, my family
And all my companions.

4. I plead for all blessings and goodness;
For the Lord's Abode;
May the Source of all power;
Grant you all victory.

5. O God, You are the Pantocrator,
And faithful Saviour,
Your help is our only bastion;
And the strength of our shield.

For whoever's interested, I found a half-decent recording of Kanisety Argo Laki available for download at the following link:

My brother...God bless you! May our Lady, St. Mary be with you forever and ever {Amen}...

Lyrics to Teddy Afro: Ha'le'lu'ya

Our Father who is in heaven,
May your name be exceptionally be glorified...
He came from the heavens above
And He [the Son] was born from my Lady the Holy Virgin Mary...
He paid the price of my sin on the cross.
Emanuel our God became man and remained with us...
That Savior of the World, Who is the gift of Mary.
He was lanced on His side for my sin.

Ezra with ‘stringed-instruments’ and David with harp.
You
  • God, let this thanksgiving reach you, ‘Thank God’
Amen…
He took me out of slavery in Keranio [Center of Jerusalem]...
He seen and suffered a lot just for me...

Ezra with Mesenko [stringed-instruments] and David with harp
You
  • God, let this thanksgiving reach you, ‘Thank God’
Amen…

Ethiopia stretches her hand to God
And she says Haleluyah (2x]
“Mary my mother don’t cry,
My father sent me to be sacrificed.”
May glory be to His name—the one Who saved me.
How can I return his favor?
Hale, Haleluyah for the Lord who was slaughtered.
With what and how can I return his favor?
Amen…

The Heavenly Glory of the Son of God;
He locked the door of Sheol by His Cross.
May they crucify me instead of you!
May I partake with the suffering of you my Lord, Who granted me this favor.
Give peace to our country…
Our Lady, our Mother—the Giver of Mercy,
Please Virgin, the Mother of my Lord,
Be a mediator when we pray to God…
Amen…

Ethiopia stretches her hand to God
And she says Haleluyah (4x)

My brother, I hope that this was a good translation (my wife did it).

Take care and I hope that the Great Fast is a blessing to you...

Beautiful.

A long overdue thanks to you, brother; please pass on my gratitude to your wife also for her gracious efforts.

Please remember me in your prayers.

My beloved brother,

You are very welcomed.  I apologize in advace, but when or if you have time, could you please translate Kenesat el-Keptaya for me?  I have two of Ibrahim Ayad's CD's and I would like to know as much as possible the content.  I love those CD's, regardless...

Thank you and take care (take your time, if it permits).

Peace in Christ our Lord and have a great Palm Sunday and Holy Week!
