Are We (OCnet) American?
« on: March 23, 2009, 08:58:13 PM »

The Serbian Orthodox Church in Romania is an official cult recognized by the government of Romania. It is lead by a bishop appointed by the Serbian Orthodox Church.
I can tell you that most of the people who come to, at least Bezdin and Birda monasteries, are Romanian Orthodox who don't have any problems with the Serbs having churches in Romania.
As a side note, at Birda monastery, they have a piece of Saint George's skull and a chain of Saint Peter.

Just a side note, don't say official cult in American circles.  Cult has a bad connotation with it.  "Reconized religion" is what you mean.
Question a friend, perhaps he did not do it; but if he did anything so that he may do it no more.

As American as the AC current (invented by a Serb) that carries the electricity to the Computers (many of which have foreign parts or manufacturers).

Do you know, is there much use by the various Nations here of the internet?  I mean, in their languages?

Last August I fulfilled a life long dream and visited the Hopi Nation, but was disappointed that their language is almost gone.  I talked with a woman who said that when she was young (she wasn't yet even middle aged) the children still spoke Hopi but now they weren't.  They don't have radio station like the Navajo (when we got there in NM I searched and found their station.  Didn't understand a word of course, except when they had English segments, but thought it was important to hear).

One thing I fear is the internet excellerating the rush to English.  Which, now that I see that I "was the originator" of this thread:

I'm used to Romanians' turns of phrase which don't come out the way they mean, hence if ma were to tell an American (and there are plenty of them running about in Romania now, especially in the religious sphere) that the Serbian Orthodox were an official cult, they might get a suprised look, or if they American Baptists/Pentacostals (called pocaiti "repenters" in Romanian), agreement.

The only thing American about me is my passport.

The U.S. and France are very much siblings, and we treat each other that way. I see it more as good-natured ribbing than insults.

But back to the subject at hand: The French Internet can be accessed using the German Nokia phone, so it's already surrendered.

True. Actually, the World Wide Web, the most modern and successful application of the Internet, was invented in 1993, during Gore's vice-presidency, and most of its biggest companies--Yahoo!, Google, Amazon, eBay--were founded during that period as well.

There is no specific program for my dialect of Salish which is an coastal dialect. But there is a program for the puget sound dialect called Lushootseed. I have been learning bits and pieces here and there. They teach it on the reservation at the schools. Vi Hilbert really led the effort to reintroduce Lushootseed. For awhile she taught it at the UW. I had the honor of interviewing her and recording her speak Lushootseed about 9 years ago. If I lived on the reservation there would be more available to me in terms of language. The real threat to native language is that fact that rez's are black holes.

I'm an American, but so is everyone else on both continents.  I suppose that I'm not ethnically anything.  My surname is anglicized from the French original, but as war as I know I have French, English, Irish, and many others I have forgotten.  I kind of hate the lack of connection to my past.  My Christianity is my only real heritage, and Orthodoxy is completing that for me!

So I repeat the question. Is the collective "we" who constitute OCnet American?

I would say absolutely.  We bring our american mannerisms, mindset, "demand for rights" etc. into the board in an overarching manner.  When people such as yourself bring up certain "international niceties" it comes as a shock to people, or people don't know exactly how to deal with it.

On the other hand, I would also say that the majority of the people here have been enculturated with some kind of OTHER culture as well, and so are much more open thinking than most "normal americans".  But it's hard to deny that we don't act, think and post in an "american" fashion.
I got nothing.
I forgot the maps

The majority "we", yes, probably, but not exclusively. But then you must define OC.net...total membership, active members only, or something else.

I live in Poland and I'm Belarusian nationality from Podlachian ethnic group. There were people who insisted I am an Ukrainian, Pole or Russian but I didn't care.

I'm certainly not an American. I've never been to the USA :P

Defining the collective, huh... Mr. 4 of 7.

OC.net is American if you go by server location or dominant language (EN:US).

Meaning many here are just in the OC.net diaspora  :D

Is OCnet a "we" or an "it"?
If you're living a happy life as a Christian, you're doing something wrong.
