Icon Corners
« on: March 03, 2009, 10:55:20 PM »
I know that Icon Corners are often found in the homes of EO Christians. I have seen pictures of this, and I find it a very beautiful tradition. I was just wondering, is this tradition OK for those of us who are Ethiopian Orthodox?

I would think it would be O.K.  The man in this video uses an icon corner:

I've seen icon corners in Coptic homes I've been in.  Also, even though Armenians don't use icons quite as much as the Copts do, it is not uncommon to see an icon corner in an Armenian home.  I have one.

Your priest will be the one to put some finality to this question. ;)

Very true.

Also, your priest can advise you about which icons would be good in your icon corner.  I would think you would want, at a minimum, Christ, the Mother of God, and your patron saint.  Also, you should ask your priest to bless your icons the next time you are able to visit your church.  I would assume the Ethiopians have that custom.  It exists in the Armenian Church.  Are you able to e-mail your priest?  I would try to contact him before your next visit, so you know ahead of time if you should bring your icons to be blessed by him.  At my church, you can ask the priest to put your icons on the altar during the liturgy.  That is one way of blessing them.

Thank you all. I will now look forward to creating an Icon Corner in our home. I always sprinkle some holy water on my Icons before hanging them up, but of course I will bring them to my Priest the next chance I get.

I am always grateful for the informed knowledge that all of you provide in helping me in my Orthodox growth.
