I want this.

It is said their mother, St. Emilia, departed today in 375 AD.

I'd like an icon of the whole family, Macrina the Elder, Basil the Elder and Emilia, and the children Macrina, Theosebia, Basil the Great, Gregory of Nyssa, Naucratius, Peter of Sebaste.
Vain existence can never exist, for "unless the LORD builds the house, the builders labor in vain." (Psalm 127)

If the faith is unchanged and rock solid, then the gates of Hades never prevailed in the end.

Is there some symbolic significance to Christ's first steps in Orthodox tradition? I now see this kind of icon isn't unheard of.

As far as I've been able to find out, this sort of imagery is derived from post-schism Roman Catholic sources, much like the paintings of little Jesus making birds out of wood in Joseph's workshop. The "icons" I've come across all appear to be very recent (20th-21st century). I've not come across any Orthodox reference for any symbolism for this event. The closest would be Luke 2:52 :

And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

What about the Mother of God making her first steps?

Happy shall he be, that shall take and dash thy little ones against the rock. Alleluia.

Once Christ has filled the Cross, it can never be empty again.

I just learned one of my good friends, a Coptic deacon (capital D Deacon) and his wife are expecting a baby girl a day after my birthday.  And they're naming her Emilia because of St. Emilia :)

Its title says as much: "The Union of Christ and the Church."

I know this probably isn't really that strange, but when I look at it I can't help but think of it as a traditional Theotokos with Christ icon that was run through some sort of "anime" filter. I guess it has to do with her big sparkly eyes.

I've seen anachronism in icons before, but this is a bit much.

Other icons incorporate portraits of parishioners at St. James and leaders of the Church in Seattle and beyond.  In this icon of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, you can find Mother Teresa, Mother Cabrini, and Pope John Paul II, as well as Archbishop Brunett, Bishop George Thomas, Archbishop Murphy, and many more.

Anachronisms or no, they're just integrated terribly.

I like that same artist's take on the Annunciation, what with an out-of-place St. James the Greater peeping in the background.

I agree it wouldn't be a wedding ;p but the musicians in this fresco are Romanians, not Gypsies - the way of wearing and acting of Gypsies are different than Romanian ones, it's easy to differentiate both groups in the streets of Romania ;)

I'll be honest, I like what the artist was going for.

It was mind blowing for the first time hearing the symbolism of the Burning Bush, with the bush being on fire but not consumed, with the Virgin Mary who was able to contain the Entirety of God within her womb and not be consumed.

And out of the bush, God sets His people free.

Holy Emily, pray for us.

Guys, it actually says MACRINA in English right on the icon. Get your lives together.
