Lord, have mercy on the Christians in Mosul!

« on: February 08, 2009, 12:47:18 AM »

A couple of weeks ago, I had mentioned that my employer had given me two weeks notice of my imminent layoff due to corporate reorganization.  Well, the two weeks are now past, and I will begin my job search in earnest this coming Monday.

Brethren:

I have been there.  At one point, I couldn't find a steady job for more than two years.  Just a lot of part time work.  Even though I dont have the most ideal situation now, I have a job that pays the bills mosto f the time.  I am thankful because I am in the process of making things work to get where me and my wife are looking to be.  Because of the current situation (I will not get political), I'm having to get a second job that works around my first.  It may be tough to find, but Im gonna try.

Dont get discouraged.  God has something for you.  Keep praying and never stop looking.  Keep your prayer life up and your burden will be easier.  And when the opportunity arises, grab it and dont let go.

Lord have mercy on us all in these tough times.

Peace

Lord, have mercy!

I never experienced that (yet?), but to some extent I know how it feels, because in late 2003 I was told by my university administration that the chance for me to get tenure was zero, so I began to look for employment elsewhere. Miraculously, I got my present job in just a few months (April '04), but I do remember the emotional upheaval.

May the Lord grant you patience and persistence. May He guide you to your next job where you will be best fit to serve Him!

Lord have mercy!

I do know what it is like to have this type of economic uncertainty. Please believe me when I tell you that this time period too is a gift from God, as He readies you to serve Him somewhere else.

And then, when you arrive at the situation He knows you can serve Him in, may prayer is that you serve Him as you serve everyone you encounter.

Let me tell you my recent employment history, which I believe was influenced by our Lord.

I was displaced by a department of state government from an excellent and very well paying position, due to change in the governor and the political party.  It was done amicably, "You're a good guy, but, etc."

I was out of work for 6 months; my brother hired me in a temporary position for 2 mos.; he paid me more than the position would customarily pay.  Two months later, I was offerred a position with another elected official, an Orthodox Christian, but all he had available was a position that represented a 56% pay cut from my prior full time position.  I've been taught humility, living on this salary.  I did not seek other employment because I wanted to continue to earn time in the public sector retirement system, in which I had 27 years invested.  Coincidentally, 4-5 months after my employment began, this public entity began experiencing substantial financial short falls in revenue and an ostensible mandated extraordinary expense.  The public entity decided to try a "buy-out" program to reduce the work force.  They offerred to buy 3 years for those who choose to accept the buy-out and retire.  30 years is the amount needed for, what is considered full retirement, w/a generous minimal cost medical plan.  The buy out will give me 30.5 years.  My annual pension amount will be 26% more than my current salary.  I will also be entitled to a preliminary, one time payment of a sizeable amount money.  By coincidence, the date that is most economically beneficial for my effective retirement date, is the day before Great Lent begins.  I'm going to spend some time in my church, utilizing the talents God gave me, to the benefit of my parish, doing things I've put off for years.

The lessons here: The humility and the blessing of a substantial pension for life that I never expected; and I'm 55 yrs. old, so I can get another job and just save the money from that salary.  (I also received a relatively clean bill of health from a physical I had several months ago.)

PeterThe Aleut, I will add you to my prayers and I've typically enjoyed reading your commentary herein.

A couple of weeks ago, I had mentioned that my employer had given me two weeks notice of my imminent layoff due to corporate reorganization.  Well, the two weeks are now past, and I will begin my job search in earnest this coming Monday.

I know how hard it is to be unemployed..... many many Russians and Serbs came to this country over the last 15 years assisted by the Slavic Benevolent Society.  The majority of them have spent several years after arrival on the unemployment benefit (as we call it here) and have only slowly found work by sitting their examinations again or retraining for other work. It can be heartbreaking.

What we did, for several years, was offer a Moleben to Saint Xenia of Petersburg on Saturday mornings.  She is pleased to assist people with finding work.  I see that you are OCA so your parish will be familiar with her veneration.  Ask your priest to offer a prayer service to her.

Just an update:  I've filled my schedule up with a lot of local IT user group meetings and other networking events, all with the goal of networking for that 80% of all job openings that don't get advertised.  It's certainly been a lot of fun getting to know people I hadn't known before, developing my social skills, and learning new things, but that doesn't diminish the fact that I still need a job.

My husband recently had his hours cut from 40 to 28...we don't know how we will raise 3 children on one salary, cut as it was. So I know to some extent how you are feeling. Sad I am hoping that God's will will be done in your situation and in ours....this is the only time in 29 years of having the same job that this has ever happened to my husband; he is taking it very hard. I am hoping God will lead him back to Himself through this (my husband is a Baptist who is not practicing.)

Ever since becoming interested in Orthodoxy for some reason I had become drawn to St Xenia of Petersburg (one reason I chose her name for my nickname here). Now I learn she likes to help find work for people...God works in mysterious ways!
