What should I do?
« on: January 28, 2009, 12:46:41 AM »
I've already asked for prayers regarding this in months past, but it's still a problem.  Basically, I have constant pain and stiffness in my spine.  It's been going on for about 5-6 years now, and it only seems to be getting worse.  I've seen doctors, but they just throw pain medication at me and give me spinal injections that don't work.  In any case, many days I think my spinal cord is pinched, because I feel very depressed but also numb and in pain.  It not only affects my spine but also affects my mind and my spiritual life.

I've been praying to St. John Maximovitch, St. Nektarios, St. Xenia of Petersburg, St. Dionysius of Zakynthos, and the Virgin Mary.  I feel though that they are not answering me.  I apply oil from the tomb of St. John Maximovitch on my body every day, and I pray Akathists, and other prayers as well.   Since conventional medicine hasn't helped me, I started going to a homeopathic practitioner.  But after going to him for several months, I'm finding that it's not helping either.  I feel somewhat cornered and frustrated.  It makes it difficult to know from experience that the saints and Mary care for me.  I'm wondering if I should ask my priest for the mystery of anointing.

Right now I'm working for a bank.  I had a bad experience as a first year teacher last year, and I came back home.  I do my best on the job, and yet I find it difficult, when suffering from spinal compression, to be the cheery bank teller that they want.

So, if you could please pray for me, I would greatly appreciate it.

Lord have mercy!
Question a friend, perhaps he did not do it; but if he did anything so that he may do it no more.
A hasty quarrel kindles fire,
and urgent strife sheds blood.
If you blow on a spark, it will glow;
if you spit on it, it will be put out;
                           and both come out of your mouth

Have you tried using an inversion table? (consult your doctor to see if this is safe for you). I have really bad spinal compression pain with each pregnancy and chiropractic care and inversion help tremendously.

Lord have mercy on your servant!

Lord, Have Mercy!

Could you have spinal stenosis or a herniated disc?

Thanks for mentioning the inversion table.
I've gone to VAX-D sessions before (when the table/rack gradually extends your spine).  I didn't experience much perceived benefit from this, but I think it's because VAX-D is meant for people with lumbar disc problems, are mine are thoracic.  I've thought about inversion.  I've read that it helps many people.

From what I could gather from the doctors who examined my MRI and X-rays, it's disc degeneration in 3-4 discs.  I asked one doctor the cause, and he said "bad genetics."  I don't know to what extent each is bulging or herniated.

I would have an MRI done and consult a Spinal Specialist at either the Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC or the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. The spine is not something to be toyed with, and requires the best specialists to accurately diagnose it.

My cousin had spinal surgery done by an excellent surgeon at the Hospital for Special Surgery 2 yrs ago. If you are interested, PM me and I will give you his name.

In the interim, I would pray to St. Seraphim of Sarov.

Lord have mercy on your servant!

Lord, have mercy!

My dad has suffered with similar back issues for years, due to a mixture of bad genetics, and then a car accident exacerbated the problem.  He was pretty much told he could either get the discs fused, which would limited his range of movement and is about 50/50 in helping with the pain, or would just have to take pain killers and bear with the pain.  I pray they mind a more optimal treatment for you!
