Just give us a united American Orthodox Church and give us primacy because we're the New Rome of the world and are more influential on an international scale than the Russians or Turks could ever dream of.

All 900,000+ of us.

This thread just keeps on giving:

In reality, I live in the Bay Area where North Faces and Ugg boots are the standard almost all year long, so there aren't much distractions, and in the few hot days of the year where there are distractions, no one wants to look because we're all hideously untanned.

Actually, the opposite is true if you read many contemporary "theologians". They're the 17 year olds, not the Fathers of old.

Certainly some "historian" such as yourself can appreciate events which occurred much longer than 200 years ago impact us today, otherwise why are you busying yourself with the writings of some marble farmers from over 2000 years ago?

This should simply be sent as a form letter to reactionary classicists worldwide.

God is so immoral.  Scripture talks about him as having "knit" us together in our mothers' wombs, but you'd think he'd bother to knit some clothes.  Instead, we are actually born naked.  Surely he knows how sexually tempting nudity is?  Why would he do that?  How hard is it for God to knit a pair of underpants?

Nothing good ever came out of Calvinism, which is in many aspects closer to radical Islam than to Orthodox Christianity.

When we are speaking of 'culture' we do not mean 'what people do', but those aspects of a millenia long inheritance which may be properly used for liturgical worship in our times and societies.

About the priest in the picture, all we learn about him is that he owns two liquor stores in LA (California, not the state) and smokes cigars. Based on this limited experience with this character, he is a good and loving priest.

We have no idea what transpires in any individual's heart, and we cannot judge them based superficially upon their deeds as known to us.  As to this, I am reminded of the Catholic Saint Thomas Aquinas, who wrote many things which we hold as contrary to the Orthodox faith.  Yet, his life demonstrates (if it needed to be demonstrated) that we cannot judge the man's fate based upon those writings; in his case, we are aware of an event in 1273 in which he claimed a revelation, saying, "The end of my labors has come.  All that I have written appears to be as so much straw after the things that have been revealed to me."  How many others have had silent epiphanies and been converted at the last, and perhaps today are glorified among the saints, though unknown?  If and when we at last reach that great salvation, how many might we be surprised to find there in our company?  We must not judge anyone's final fate in such a manner.

I like how the last two posts in this thread, taken back to back, kind of illustrate the end points or poles of discussion here. "We must never judge another person, as we cannot see into their soul, and don't know what their interior spiritual life is like." "Yeah, who really cares what you think?"
