From BBC Louisiana to you, here's the morning news

« Reply #585 on: November 27, 2013, 09:25:25 PM »

oh, well, i suppose not everyone spent their teenage years listening to short wave radio from around the world and reading maps...
i am so sad for those people who missed out!
 Wink

My old Russian teacher learned English as a child via BBC broadcasts in the early 1960s, which left her with the most amazing Russian-accented RP I've ever heard. It's almost embarrassing how much nicer nearly every other form of English sounds compared to 'General American', as it's often called in linguistics circles...  Embarrassed

Russian-accented RP? Sounds like a few West Germans I ran into in London back when I was a kid. They were old enough to have grown up in the British zone of West Germany before moving over to London. They had the most bizarre, yet somehow perfect combination of German and Estuary English which sounded vaguely Afrikaner.

AFAIK, it's just an iconographic depiction of the vision of the Holy Cross which happened circa 1925 (?) on Old Calendar Holy Cross Day (?) as a sign from God in favor of the Orthodox calendar and against the godless Gregorians.
That's what I gathered this as. I just saw it on some blog run by a guy whose first name was "Reader."

Very *ahem* colorful analogy! I like it!

Hyper-emotionally, I am thrilled that Moscow is not allowing any more Mosques as I find Islam to be the brown-stain on the underwear of humanity.

MichaelofSN,

I am sorry, but you and your wife are not members of the Orthodox Church at this time. Why? Because your OCA priest ruined it for you. His incompetence and lack of love for the teaching and rules of the Church, have ruined it for you and your wife. Your wife had Affusion (water poured) on her head, and there is no economia for this; nor is there economia for single immersion baptism.

I do not know how to put this diplomatically, but you are wrong.

I've been doing some reading and YouTube-watching about North Korea. It appears that all tourists are taken to enormous statues of Kim Il-sung and his son and the tourists are required to bow and place flowers before the statue.  This seems very much like offering "a pinch of incense" to the Roman ceasars and our Christian forefathers and foremothers chose martyrdom instead of compromising in this way. If you were ever given the opportunity to visit North Korea,  could you "venerate" this statue?

-xenia

Why would any sane person want to visit North Korea?

Weird countries are intriguing. I'd like to visit US, Russia and Saudi-Arabia too.

Gore, some religious, some abstract humour.

No, I think I get them, I just didn't think they were very funny at first.  But then I figured they lost something in translation, so I started re-reading them and imagining them in several foreign accents with culturally appropriate mannerisms, and then they became funny.

My favourites are the second and the fourth.  I've heard variations of the third before.  The first is not as funny to me due to certain life experiences.

Sorry.

That's the problem with these jokes. Simillar to gossiping about priests. One first need to ask if priest X is uncle/father/in-law/other-kind-of-relative before starting.

LOL.  Re: clergy, only if I am concerned there might be some truth to a bad story will I exercise some discernment.  Otherwise, I never do much investigation before sharing funny stories, banter, "gossip", etc.  But the circle of people among whom I'll share such things is also limited.
