I thought Mr. Yuk was supposed to exemplify something from St. Evagrius' Praktikos.

Bummer.

Maybe he does?

So far we have learned that Catholic and Orthodox Christians disagree about the nature of the Papacy. Cool thread.

Leftover chicken casserole and hand-cut oven chips.

On a wednesday?

It was that or nothing. These are some very lean cow times in the spider's household.

Too bad you didn't opt for nothing.  That would be an appropriate Orthodox fast.

I pray for you to God with thinly veiled contempt.  He's angry too.  He told me.

All the bishops were annihilated in the late 1600's.

Thank you. But I'm looking for Orthodox terms, not English translations.

English words often don't express what the Greek does, and often are adaptations from Latin, which themselves are based on a translation from Greek to Latin, which is sometimes influenced by Western theology.

Well if Christians back then had the same martyr omplex they tend to display today then no wonder . In a hundred years we'll commemorate the holy 2 million confessors of the Midwest that Walmart employes greeted with happy holidays to which they retorted merry Christmas

Some quotable quotes of notable mention imo:

That's good. I've always imagined Mor as a bodybuilder.

LOL.  Far from it, but thanks.  Tongue

True story.  When I was in college, I lived with a few guys, and one of their friends would swing by often.  He was the son of an Italian father and a Chinese mother (so he had a distinctive appearance), and he was a hardcore bodybuilding type (perhaps he used steroids, I don't know for sure like I did for the others), a great student, and the most lapsed SSPXer you ever met (he never even once entered a "modern" RC church until I broke the news to him that there was Mass in English...he did so only to prove to me that the Catholic Church "would never do something so stupid", and then came back horrified).  Quite a combination...a great guy.  Anyway, one day he interrupted my studying to ask me "Didn't St Paul say that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit?"  And I replied affirmatively.  So then he grabbed a bit of my belly fat and proclaimed "God doesn't want a chapel...", and then ripping off his shirt and flexing his very muscular muscles, he bellowed "HE WANTS A CATHEDRAL!!!"

One wonders what St. Evagrius, or any of the Desert Fathers, would have said about religious discussion forums.

St. Ephraim the Syrian said:
O Lord and Master of my life, give me not the spirit of sloth, meddling, lust for power and idle talk.
But grant unto me, Thy servant, a spirit of chastity, humility, patience and love.
Yea, O Lord and King, grant me to see mine own faults and not to judge my brother. For blessed art Thou unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Blessed is the man that manages to post regularly on oc.net and not violate any of the above!

You can comfort yourself with the thought that you are being persecuted for righteousness' sake if you want.

On September 1, we commemorate the martyric death of Reader Xenophon, whose head exploded as he contemplated the hierarchies of feasts, the proper colors of vestments, and the intricacies of the typikon. In most places, his memory is superseded by the feast of the Indiction, but in places where his memory is especially venerated, his service is chanted a while banging one's head on the wall as a sign of contrition and humility.

The sagacious advisers of the new Pontiff.

The first thing I decided was to appoint a group of eight cardinals to be my advisers.

The first cardinal adviser he names is Cardinal Martini.  Who are the other seven who advise the Pope?  Cardinals Pina Colada, Margareta, Daiquiri, Mojito, Ginantonic, Screwdriver, and Maitai?

How would you respond if a restaurant started offering a sandwich with Phosphora for a bun?

Less important than how a Christian begins is how he ends, and usually not very well as they tend to end just like everyone else in the world around them. People can mock the Odox and other "liturgical" Christians for all their pomp, but to be fair, without it, how would anyone know these people were Christians?

I would just wear a collared shirt, dark shoes, preferably dress shoes, and slacks, if you have them.

How is this Russian tradition? What are you talking about?

If you ask me we should copy "What are you talking about?" and insert it several times a day on almost all threads lately.
