So Peter, by way of clarification and so that I might respect your warning, I genuinely found what Fabio posted to be very funny and, seeing that Mor and others posted content from WPM, hayabusa, Pravoslavac, et al, because they found those posts to be silly in a similar way, I followed suit.  The only difference is, none of the other posters quoted became indignant or argumentative about it (though they very well could have).  So for the future, is it wrong to post quotes here ironically because you find them to be silly or ridiculous?  Should we only post quotes we genuinely admire?  Or - if we are allowed to post silly quotes ironically - should we call upon the mods if the person quoted gets offended and begins to attack us?  Please let me know, because I genuinely didn't mean any harm.  I just found the quote funny.  Thank you.

  • Seeing that my directive was public, you should have addressed this inquiry to me via private message, lest you be seen as arguing publicly with a moderator's directive.
  • That said, I see no problem with the original quote that provoked Fabio's reply. It's on Fabio to not flame you for it. Once he flamed you, it's on you to not return fire.

I read on facebook once that as long as I post that I am maintaining my property rights over my posts, then they are mine.

If you can't trust facebook to provide you with top notch intellectual property rights legal opinions, then who can you trust?

You mean that while you take your plan to heal the schism in the Malankara Church by having both sides form a joint militia to combat ISIS seriously, you're actually willing to accept the fact that others might find it humorous?  I applaud you, sir, for your obvious self-confidence, maturity and willingness to poke a bit of fun at yourself!  ;D

I myself sometimes poke a bit of fun at myself; I prefer to avoid being merely a pompous windbag, although I am I suppose at times variously pompous and grandiloquent.   :P

I do maintain that plan would have worked, however.   ;)

Now to everyone involved: This thread, located as it is on Other Topics, is intended to be nothing more than an idle pastime. This is not a place for debate or for bringing in whatever conflicts you might have with another poster.

EDIT - I removed the green colour so as not to appear as though I am co-opting a mod's authority.

Lolololol.

I take back half of what I've said about you for sharing this.

That itself is quotable, although I fear if I quote it, it will create a recursive self-referential loop that will devour all reality as we know it.

This is not a joke, this is me genuinely liking this quote:

Try not to make praying a moral act. What most people describe as a guilt and shame often are psychic overreactions which deplete our psyche rather than spur it to health.

Pray. If you don't. Try it the next time. See if you can't avoid the snares of the ego, which is the antithesis of the healthy conscience.
Vain existence can never exist, for "unless the LORD builds the house, the builders labor in vain." (Psalm 127)

If the faith is unchanged and rock solid, then the gates of Hades never prevailed in the end.

+1

This is the Orthonorm I wish we had more of. More wisdom like this please.

Reminds me of this gem from Carlos Santana:

Divinity and light in their DNA? Rather New Age, isn't it?
My only weakness is, well, never mind

Yes. Not exactly Orthodoxy, but I think the essence of the statement is compatible with Orthodox truth.

With the exception of that last sentence, I must say Gebre, I was just talking about this very subject with a group of other people today (i.e. the feeling of guilt vs. the love of God and the feeling of guilt based on the ego).
Vain existence can never exist, for "unless the LORD builds the house, the builders labor in vain." (Psalm 127)

If the faith is unchanged and rock solid, then the gates of Hades never prevailed in the end.

Speaking of New Age, I sometimes wonder if it and traditionalism (in the Rene Guenon sense) are basically the same thing, the only differences being that the former is more associated with American left-wing post-60s politics while the latter seems to be associated with the European extreme right. But both share in common

  • a form of syncretism (all ancient, pre-modern religions approach the same "perennial" truths in some way).
  • a desire to escape modern materialism for a "re-enchanted" ancient life (we were talking about this in the Buffered and Porous Selves thread).
  • an appetite for ritual, mystery, and in particular, esoterism

I'm not going to be posting as much on OC.Net as before. I might stop in once in a while though. But I've come to realize that real life is more important.

Perennialism does, yes, have a direct connection to the New Age, via its descendants Theosophy and Anthroposophy, the last of which had very specific reverberations in California so that it is sometimes called "the first New Age movement." However, Perennialism and Theosophy were different in that the former became the framework for academic disciplines such as sociology, anthropology, and philosophy of religion (a discipline actually founded by an important Perennialist, Dr. Radhakrishnan of Oxford) during the first half of the twentieth century while the latter was a popular mystical movement claiming to restore true religion pseudo-scientifically (that is, claimed to master the disciplines listed above).
