My husband is now out of the country
« on: January 25, 2009, 01:18:04 AM »
If you could pray that his back is OK thru this deployment I would appreciate it. I am not too worried about his physical safety since he will be working in basically a doubled bunker (a room suspended within a room behind many gates and a lot of security) so of all the jobs he could be doing- this is by far the safest. But I am worried about his spiritual and emotional health since he is without any services he can attend or anyone that can really "understand" when he is coming from as an Orthodox Christian. We will be sending him regular packages and the parish will be sending him a card each month. He also too about 30 various books with him to read. But now all there is for him to do is pray, pray, pray and read, read, read.

And if you could throw in a few prayers for the health of our next babe to be born in July that would be appreciated ;D

As it stands I will see him right after the next baby is born for a couple weeks and then he will be home at the somewhere around the start of the next Nativity cycle.

Ah, if only he was paid civilian pay for what he is doing....we could go for 6 figures for the next year. ::)

We were really hoping he could fly the Western route since we live in the NW. But he had to fly East to Europe then to wherever he goes before he is in Afghanistan. If he had flown West he would have flown all the way around the world between his two deployments.

Lord, have mercy, and through the prayers of St. Christopher, carry him through these troubled waters!

He just left Frankfurt Germany. I should hear from him at some point tomorrow. Thank you for the prayers! His back did really well on the flight. He isn't in any more pain than normal and he is sleeping well.

He has arrived at his duty station. There is a Divine Liturgy celebrated the first Sunday of each month! He just missed this month's, but next month he should get a chance.

The base is really confusing and no one is showing or even telling him where to go for therapy-this one place only serves people from "x" unit, the other place is only open when the moon is in the right position, then this other place isn't open when he can go, then the other place......it is confusing and frustrating for him. And he needs help. They already tried to send him out in the hills where he couldn't get any treatment at all but fortunately they were talked out of it. The shifts are 12 hours a day 7 days a week, so he doesn't have a lot of time to look around for where to go and still get some sleep, bathe and other tasks he needs to complete.

I haven't heard anything from him in a few days. The waiting line to use the phone for 15 min. is 2 hours at a minimum. Hopefully he is doing better than when I heard from him last.

Thank you for the prayers.

When I spoke with him earlier a couple days ago he had found the physical therapy offices and they were able to help him a great deal. It is funny, he can't get chiropractic care in the states to help his back because it is "alternative care," but over there the physical therapy includes chiropractic care! It enabled him to be pain free for a couple days actually.

Next he needs to get together with the chaplin to make sure that they let him off duty so he can attend services on March 1st (the only day next month when there are services where he is). His shift is roughly 7am-7pm 7 days a week so he can't go unless they release him from duty for a couple hours or change his schedule that day to allow him to go. And it would be great to go to services so he can know just how many other Orthodox Christians there are on base!

Again thank you for the prayers.

An update for those of you that have/are praying for my husband.

He was able to attend services for Holy Week and Pascha! (Col) Fr. Alexander Webster (OCA) was there for Holy Week and Pascha. The services were small the the diversity of jurisdictions was large, but it was a real blessing to my husband to be able to attend. Just before Holy Week Fr. Alexander was there and Tim was able to meet with him for confession and some guidance which was wonderful. The arrival of Fr. Alexander was a real answer to prayer for my husband. Fr. Alexander is actually retiring this year and this is his last deployment, in fact he is done within a couple months.

Thank you again to those of you that have prayed/are praying for my husband.

What a small world!  The man on the second row, second from the left, attends the same parish that I do at home!  And just to top it off, it looks like your husband is wearing my unit's division patch, as well. :)

My husband is attached to a TX guard unit (I think the 636 MI BN based out of Austin?) it is really confusing since he is in one unit that is attached to another unit which is attached to a TX unit. Plus it is MI so they tell me almost nothing ::)

That would be the one.  I have a couple of friends who got picked up to go with the 636th.

And it's not because it's MI that they won't tell you anything....it's because it's the Army. :P  It's good to see that he's doing well, so far, though.

I forgot to mention that all services were canceled before Holy Week and Pascha and there are no services after for him either. So Holy Week and Pascha were/are his only chance to go to any services. So it was a real blessing that he could go.

I see. I don't suppose I'll ever understand the propensity of the military to create an acronym for every phrase in the English language.

My husband is doing pretty well lately. Although today/yesterday were really hard for him since he had to miss our son's second birthday. He has missed almost all the birthdays in our little family since he joined up 6 years ago. And it makes him feel really sad, upset and depressed.

We are now 32 weeks pregnant with our third girl, fourth child. He has leave scheduled for just before my due date for two weeks. I am working on getting a note that will say I need more than two weeks of help after the birth (what with the three other kids and all). The people in my parish can help me a great deal. But there are somethings that I really need him for- middle of the night nursing sessions and diaper changes, help getting bathed (I tend to feel pretty faint for a few days after delivery so normally I have him hang out in the bathroom so that I can call if I need him) and the like. We have been told that they are looking "favorably" at the idea of allowing an extension at the moment. But that is hardly an assurance of approval in the future.

My labors are pretty fast (last active labor was an hour and a half) and I confess to being more than a little paranoid about this labor and delivery. I have to have someone that can get here almost immediately to watch the older three and then find a way to the hospital. So if you could pray that everything will work out and that I will relax and not worry that would be great. This baby will be born one way or another, but I would prefer it weren't at home with my eldest daughter acting as midwife ;) If I could hold out to go into labor until after my husband is home (but not too long after as he has a limited amount of leave and I need as much helps as I can get) then many a fear and worry will be relieved.

The kids are doing really well with the deployment. And there is a job that could possibly station my husband here in the states for a month or so after his leave is over. This would not mean that we could see him, but it would make video chatting and talking on the phone possible. And it would be wonderful for us all if he could have this position so we could stay in touch better- at the moment we just IM everyday. And to be able to hear his voice would help so much after he has to go back from leave, especially for our son.

Thank you for your prayers
