Church "letter? Help!
« on: September 24, 2003, 05:21:14 PM »
Hello,

My mother (like me, a convert) asked me the other day if I had a certificate for my Chrismation.

Mananging to stifle my instictive response of "what do you think I am, Protestant?" I replied that I had no idea what she was talking about.  She says you're supposed to get some sort of paperwork.

Am I supposed to ask my priest for paperwork on my conversion?  I've never heard of that before.  I've never been asked for one, but then again, I rarely participate in the Holy Mysteries at a church other than my own, unless I've spoken to the priest, and it's never come up.

I don't know if you are required to ask for paperwork upon conversion, but it is my understanding that parishes maintain records of things like baptisms by having certificates placed in the records should they ever be needed.  I would presume that, upon your Chrismation, such a document/certificate was made and put into the parish files.  You don't need it in your possession for, for example, visiting another parish, but if it is ever needed for something, you can always get it from your church.

Right Phil. When I was chrismated last May Fr. John filled out a form in a diocese book that I signed. A copy is also sent to diocese headquarters.

When I was chrismated, I also got a certificate as well as it being recorded for the parish and the diocese.  I framed it and keep it near my icon corner.

I did not receive any paper or sign any paper, but I am aware that it was reported to the OCA diocese anyway.

When you're in front of the chalice in a parish where you are a visitor. the priest isn't going to ask you for paperwork ... if one is asked questions, it usually relates to who one's bishop is, who one's priest is and the like.

Yes, of course you are right, and I ususally don't participate in the Holy Mysteries when I'm traveling, so in the vast majority of cases it is not an issue.

...... it's a matter of answering my Mother
