« on: December 27, 2008, 09:08:59 AM »

Im hoping that some of you can teach me to say prayers in Romanian. I've been listening to Romanian Chants lately, and that sparked my interest to know and want to pray in that language. Ive tried consulting online translator, but apparantly most of them don't seem reliable.  Grin Maybe you can help me, I just need the translation for the basic prayers like the Trisagion, and the like.

Thanks much! and may a prosperous new year be ahead of us!

I'm grad that you want to know romanian language.
The translation for Trisagion is like this:

Holy God,                Holy [and] Mighty,  Holy [and] Immortal,    have mercy on us
Sfinte Dumnezeule,  Sfinte tare,             Sfinte fara de moarte,  miluieste-ne pre noi

Romanian Trisagion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfI_hnQJ4jQ&feature=related
PSALM 50 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iN-QvD-mkzc&feature=PlayList&p=9B68ED1D34BD9835&index=10

If you want other translation just let me know.

Poti sa te-intreb, de ce limba romana?  Why Romanian?

The Our Father:

Tatăl nostru care eşti în ceruri,
sfinţească-se numele Tău,
vie împărăţia Ta,
facă-se voia Ta, precum în cer aşa şi pe pământ.
Pâinea noastră cea de toate zilele [or: Pâinea noastră cea spre fiinţă]
dă-ne-o nouă astăzi
şi ne iartă nouă greşelile noastre
precum şi noi iertăm greşiţilor noştri.
Şi nu ne duce pe noi în ispită,
ci ne izbǎveşte de cel rău.
Căci a Ta este împărăţia şi puterea şi mărirea,

acum şi pururea şi în vecii vecilor. Amin.

Thanks for the links and translations!

What is Romanian for, "Lord have Mercy", "Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit...",
and "Glory to Thee our God, Glory to thee"?

Mărirea is also found for "glory," as btw, Dreptcredincios for ortodox.

Is better to use ,,Slavă" because of meaning

Romanian spelling is mostly phonetic

There are special letters
Ă ă — a with breve - for the sound /ə/
⠗ a with circumflex - for the sound /ɨ/ like e in roses
Î î — i with circumflex - for the sound /ɨ/ idem like above (a romanian language anomaly)
Ș ș — s with comma - for the sound /ʃ/ like s in "sugar"
Ț ț — t with comma - for the sound /ʦ/ like zz in "pizza"

How about for these introductory prayers..?

"Through the prayers of our Holy Fathers, o Lord Jesus Christ our God have Mercy on us!

O Most Holy Trinity Have Mercy on us, O Lord, Blot out our sins. O Master, pardon our iniquities. O Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities for your name's sake.

O Come let us worship God our king!
O Come let us worship and fall down before Christ our King and our God!
O Come let us worship and fall down before Christ Himself our King and our God!"

Multumesc.

My exwife is from Bucharest.  My in-laws, who spoke only Romanian, lived with us for 4 years. Undecided

On a happier note, when I was corresponding during our courtship,  I suggested that I write a letter in Romanian. She said I could try.  She expected a postcard: I wrote a 12 page letter.  She said she cried when she saw it.

I take my sons to the Romanian Church (the Patriarchal Cathedral) once a month so they can see normal Romanians.

Here is the Psalm 50:

Psalmul 50
1.   Miluieşte-mă, Dumnezeule, după mare mila Ta

No, in Chicago.  I meant the patriarchal cathedral for the OCR in the Americas. It's also dedicated to SS Constantine and Helen as the Metropol, which I have visited and venerated the relics of St. Dimitrie Basarabov.  I have an anniversary edition of the Bucharest Bible, the huge one with a facimile of the Cyrilic facing the Latin transcription.  My ex was baptized at St. John the New (Ion cel Nou de la Ioncului), but went I think to St. Elie.

When is C pronounced as CH?

before e or i, like when English C is pronounced like 'S.'

Ch is written before e or i when it is pronounced like 'k' still, (actually it is palatalized, with a small 'y' sound in the 'k').  Same for g, so George is "Gheorghe" gyorgye.

NOTE: when i has the ^ over it, c is NOT pronounced "ch" but "k."  This happens only in communist era spellings.

When is C pronounced as CH?

'C' is pronounced like 'K' (for example 'cor', meaning choir is pronounced like 'core' in English) except when it is in the following groups:
- 'CE', pronounced like 'Che' in Che Guevara
- 'CI', pronounced like 'Chi', the Chinese word
- 'CHE', pronounced like 'Ke' in keg
- 'CHI', pronounced like 'Ki' in kilt

The same goes for G.

From wikipedia:

As in Italian, the letters c and g represent the affricates /ʧ/ and /ʤ/ before i and e, and /k/ and /g/ elsewhere. When /k/ and /g/ are followed by vowels /e/ and /i/ (or their corresponding semivowels or the final /ʲ/) the digraphs ch and gh are used instead of c and g, as shown in the table below.

|Group|   |Phoneme|   |Pronunciation|   |Examples|
ce, ci   /tʃ/   ch in chest, cheek   cerc (circle), cine (who)
che, chi   /k/   k in kettle, kiss   chem (I call), chimie (chemistry)
ge, gi   /dʒ/   j in jelly, jigsaw   ger (frost), gimnast (gymnast)
ghe, ghi   /g/   g in get, give   gheţar (glacier), ghid (guide)

In the word Dumnezeule, what i hear is, Dum-ne-ze-u-le.. But i used to read it as Dum-ne-zeu-le reading the zeu like zwe.. When do we pronounce vowels like this separately? And can you give me other examples where vowels spelled like this are pronounced separately?

The diphthongs and tripthongs in Romanian tend to have a fuller pronunciation of the less dominate vowel, which might be exaggerated, for instance, in singing.  Hence ze-u.  However, eu is not we but eh-oo.

[edit] Diphthongs and triphthongs
Romanian has two diphthongs: /e̯a/ and /o̯a/. As a result of their origin (diphthongization of short mid vowels under stress), they appear only in stressed syllables[2] and make morphological alternations with the mid vowels /e/ and /o/. In addition to these, the semivowels /j/ and /w/ can be combined (either before, after, or both) with most vowels, arguably[3] forming additional diphthongs and triphthongs.

Falling
Diphthong Examples
/aj/ rai /raj/ 'heaven', aisberg /ˈajs.berɡ/ 'iceberg'
/aw/ sau /saw/ 'or', august /ˈaw.ɡust/ 'August'
/ej/ lei /lej/ 'lions', trei /trej/ 'three'
/ew/ greu /ɡrew/ 'heavy', mereu /meˈrew/ 'always'
/ij/ mii /mij/ 'thousands', vii /vij/ 'you come'
/iw/ fiu /fiw/ 'son', scriu /skriw/ 'I write'
/oj/ oi /oj/ 'sheep (pl.)', noi /noj/ 'we'
/ow/ ou /ow/ 'egg', bou /bow/ 'ox'
/uj/ pui /puj/ 'you put', gălbui /ɡəlˈbuj/ 'yellowish'
/əj/ răi /rəj/ 'bad (masc. pl.)', văi /vəj/ 'valleys'
/əw/ dulău /duˈləw/ 'mastiff', rău /rəw/ 'bad (masc. sg.)'
/ɨj/ câine /ˈkɨj.ne/ 'dog', mâinile /ˈmɨj.ni.le/ 'the hands'
/ɨw/ râu /rɨw/ 'river', brâu /brɨw/ 'girdle'
/uw/ eu continuu /konˈti.nuw/ 'I continue' (partly replaced by eu continui)[4]

Diphthong Examples
/e̯a/ beată /ˈbe̯a.tə/ 'drunk' (f.), mea /me̯a/ 'my (fem. sg.)'
/e̯o/ Gheorghe /ˈɡe̯or.ɡe/ 'George', ne-o ploua /ne̯o.ploˈwa/ 'it would rain us'
/e̯u/ (only in word combinations) pe-un /pe̯un/ 'on a'
/ja/ biatâ /bja.tə/ 'poor' (f.), mi-a zis /mjaˈzis/ '(he) told me'
/je/ fier /fjer/ 'iron', miere /ˈmje.re/ 'honey'
/jo/ iod /jod/ 'iodine', chior /ˈkjor/ 'one-eyed'
/ju/ iubit /juˈbit/ 'loved', chiuvetă /kjuˈve.tə/ 'sink'
/o̯a/ găoace /ɡəˈo̯a.tʃe/ 'shell', foarte /ˈfo̯ar.te/ 'very'
/we/ piuez /piˈwez/ 'I felt (a fabric)', înşeuez /ɨn.ʃeˈwez/ 'I saddle (a horse)'
/wa/ băcăuan /bə.kəˈwan/ 'inhabitant of Bacău', ziua /ˈzi.wa/ 'the day'
/wə/ două /ˈdo.wə/ 'two (fem.)', plouă /ˈplo.wə/ 'it rains'
/wɨ/ plouând /ploˈwɨnd/ 'raining', ouând /oˈwɨnd/ 'laying (eggs)'
Triphthong Examples
/e̯aj/ ceainic /ˈtʃe̯aj.nik/ 'tea pot', socoteai /so.koˈte̯aj/ 'you were reckoning'
/e̯aw/ beau /be̯aw/ 'I drink', spuneau /spuˈne̯aw/ 'they were saying'
/jaj/ mi-ai dat /mjajˈdat/ 'you gave me', ia-i /jaj/ 'take them'

/e̯o̯a/ pleoape /ˈple̯o̯a.pe/ 'eyelids', leoarcă /ˈle̯o̯ar.kə/ 'soaking (wet)'
/jo̯a/ creioane /kreˈjo̯a.ne/ 'pencils', aripioară /a.riˈpjo̯a.rə/ 'winglet'

As can be seen from the examples above, the diphthongs /e̯a/ and /o̯a/ contrast with /ja/ and /wa/ respectively, though there are no perfect minimal pairs to contrast /o̯a/ and /wa/.[5] and, impressionistically, the two pairs sound very similar[6] In some regional pronunciations, the diphthong /o̯a/ tends to be pronounced as a single vowel /ɒ/.[citation needed]

Other triphthongs such as /juj/ and /o̯aw/ occur sporadically in interjections and uncommon words.

The articles in wikipedia on Romanian are by and large good.

What are the lyrics of the Great Doxology in Romanian? Does anyone have links to the Romanian wordings of the Divine Liturgy?

Quote

Troparion of the Sunday of Orthodoxy:
Preacuratului Tau chip ne inchinam, Bunule, cerând iertare  gresalelor noastre, Hristoase Dumnezeule; ca de voie ai binevoit a Te sui cu trupul pe Cruce, ca sa izbavesti din robia vrajmasului pe cei pe care i-ai zidit. Pentru aceasta cu multumire strigam Tie: toate le-ai umplut de bucurie, Mântuitorul nostru, Cel ce ai venit sa mântuiesti lumea.

As Someone who knows English, Spanish, French, Italian and Latin, I once thought that French was the most far removed from Latin, but now I see it's Romanian so much that I have a huge difficulty understanding Romanian.
Why is that?

It's probably because of the Slavic and Oriental influences.
Here's a link that might help:

Why is that?
Romanian is 60% Latin, 20% Slavic and 20% other influences due to our geographical position, but 80% of our basic vocabulary(most frequently used words) is Latin.

I take my sons to the Romanian Church (the Patriarchal Cathedral) once a month so they can see normal Romanians.
So far the boys and I have managed to survive, and they are growing in the Orthodox Faith. Rugati-va pentru noi.

and how do you say morning prayers such as the ones that start like this:  "Arising from sleep, we fall down before you, oh good One..."
and "O Lord, clense me, a sinner, for I have never done anything good in your sight..."

also, where can I get a Romanian prayer book?  I would like to follow along at liturgy when I go to the local monastery.
