Out shopping for toys for those special kiddies in your life who have been nice (and even naughty)? Be careful: Some of those would-be stocking stuffers may be toxic. The National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and Public Citizen yesterday sued the feds to force them to order stores to remove tot's toys and childcare products that contain toxic plastics called phthalates from their shelves pronto. The watchdog groups charge in the complaint filed in Manhattan Federal Court that the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is flouting "the will of Congress'' by allowing retailers to stockpile and continue to sell products from dolls to rubber ducks containing the chemicals after Feb. 10 -- the date a federally mandated ban on their production and sale is set to take effect -- as long as they were manufactured before the deadline... Yikes. It's a good thing we're not buying too many toys for the little ones in the extended family (cousins, godchildren, et al.). Thankfully, we don't have too many that would use the types of "softened plastic" toys that seem to be more useful/appreciated amongst babies and young toddlers.

Yeah, but the article doesn't do you much good if it doesn't say which toys are made with phthalates.
I mean, what are we supposed to avoid? Do you know how many toys out there aren't made with plastic? About none!

At one point there was a link in that article that went to a list of phthalate-laden toys but the link is broken now. Here are some tips on avoiding toys with phthalates:

That's because DVDs are typically considered non-toxic.  Besides, Assassin's Creed 2 is rated M, appropriate for people 17 and older. It's not a children's toy, and isn't intended to be. Heck, we trust people with a motor vehicle before an M-rated video game. |

A very unknown toxic toy are magnets. They sell magnetic balls on ebay. Kids swallow the individual balls and they stick together in their stomachs. Sometimes they even stick different intestines together and can lead to holes in the bowels. Very dangerous toy.
