Lord, have mercy on the Christians in Mosul!

« on: December 06, 2008, 02:27:08 AM »

Okay, it's that time of year again: the time to hear that cheesy Christmas muzak everywhere you go.  Those earworms that make you want to retch or go run and hide, or maybe even make you want to hibernate until after the New Year.  You know what I mean. Wink

So, what are your least favorite original Christmas songs, or covers of traditional carols and songs?  Links to recordings are great.  I'll start with the Jackson Five's (with Jacko before he went wacko) "Santa Claus is Coming to Town". (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dS1Yysc9qHo) Tongue

For all the good music they wrote and recorded, you'd think the Beatles could actually get Christmas right.  Yeah, right! Roll Eyes

Christmas Time is Here Again - I heard this at work today while purchasing my morning coffee; the sheer repetition of this stupid little ditty made me wanna RUN back to my cubicle.  Yech! Tongue Lips Sealed  They sound like they've been drinking way too much eggnog. Tongue

And this rotten egg from Paul McCartney:  Wonderful Christmas Time

McCartney's song reminds me of a yowling cat on a fence every year, because he struggles to get the "simply having" up the vocal hill. Blech! Anybody got a boot I can throw?

Any country/western interpretation of Christmas songs.  AAAAAAARGH!

See:
Honky Tonk Angels, by Dolly Parton (and I like Dolly, even!)
Hot Rod Sleigh, by Toby Keith
Thistle Hair the Christmas Bear, by Alabama

Now the Jingle Cats are one of my personal favorite ways to rid myself of unwanted holiday guests.  Wink

We recently bought one of those WOW Christmas (2 pack of) CD's, with contemporary Christian singers singing the Christmas songs. Some of them are absolutely horrible versions. I would include in that their version of my favorite Christmas song, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.

I was in the bookstore this week and suddenly I realized how very depressing much of the Christmas music actually is...don't know why, but somehow it seems that way.

Rosehip, either that, or the music played is tacky, like when they play "Santa Baby". I DETEST, ABHOR, and REVILE that song!!

"Santa Baby", as originally covered by Eartha Kitt, or Madonna's rendition?  Yeah, I don't like hearing some tart flirt with Santa Claus, either. Tongue

I think you're right, Myrrh-tacky is a good word. It seemed to me rather cloying and schmaltzy, somehow. I don't know this song "Santa Baby" though. Don't think I've ever heard it.

Well, actually, it's pretty far down on my list of priorities-in fact, truth to tell, I wouldn't be too upset if I never heard the song at all!

Adam Sandler's Hannukkah song.

"Channukkah, oh Hannukkah,
Here comes Hannukkah.
It's not pronounced Channukkah,
So get your Hooked-on-Phonica."

Awful doesn't begin to describe it.

It is a little gem put out in 1996 entitled "Christmastime in the LBC." I am fairly sure that the moderators will prefer I do not link to the song as it manages to be both offensive and pornographic within the first 30 or so seconds. However that doesn't stop it from going on for another 3:10.

As a musician myself, I completely agree. I'd include a lot of the newer Christian music too, as it's more of the same (e.g. "Christmas Shoes"). Some of the romantic-era hymns are beautiful, though, such as "Angels We Have Heard on High" and "O Come, O Come, Immanuel."

I love that video (and Twisted Sister, in general).

The funny thing is that, according to Dee Snider himself, "O Come All Ye Faithful" was the template for their big '80s hit "We're Not Gonna Take It".
