There were rumors that he could have died in a car crash, but earlier today the Moscow Patriarchy dismissed them (http://www.portal-credo.ru/site/?act=news&id=67116&topic=616). They say he died in his residence because of a cardiac arrest.

Anyone know if cardiac arrest=heart failure=heart attack?  Thanks.

I'm, like the rest of you, in Shock.  His Holiness appeared in perfect health at the recent Pauline Symposia.

May the Memory of His Holiness be Eternal and May the Holy Spirit prevail over the Holy Synod of Russia to elect a successor who will continue strengthening the Orthodox Witness of Russia.

Amen!   Cry

Cardiac arrest is most often when the heart just stops beating because of a disruption to the heart's neuroelectric rhythm.

Heart failure is simply the failure of the heart muscle to circulate blood effectively enough for the rest of the body to continue living.

What we most often call a heart attack is caused by a clog or restriction in one of the coronary arteries feeding the heart.

Just enough information to answer a pertinent question...  No intent to distract from the spirit of prayer here...

In Paradisum deducant te angeli,
In tuo adventu suscipiate Martyres,
Et perducante in civitatem Sanctam Ierusalem.
Chorus Angelorum te suscipiant,
Et cum Lazaro quondam paupere, aeternam habeas requiem.
