No one would think that Roberto and I were so close. I met him when I was 14 and he really helped me out when I was feeling down in those awkward teenage years; he stood by me all the time when I needed him. Even after I moved away, we stayed close. But while I continued in my studies and eventually became a priest, he continued to live a wild life and had several runins with the law. I never listened to those who told me he was a bad influence, etc.; I defended this friend of mine to the end. He may not have been a good Orthodox believer, a productive member of society, or anything like that. But he is one of the only people on earth who has never treated me unkindly, who always stood by me, who always provided me with friendship, and never cheated me. He could not make it to my ordination, so he left after work and drove over night to visit me in the monastery a few days later. Unfortunately, he was driving early this morning and lost control of his car, and reposed. He leaves behind his siblings, mother, father, and many friends. We didn't talk all the time, but I can't imagine not having him there "somewhere" to talk to if needed. Please pray for his soul and for his family as well. Thank you. Fr Anastasios

Excellence of character, then, is a state concerned with choice, lying in a mean relative to us, this being determined by reason and in the way in which the man of practical wisdom would determine it. Now it is a mean between two vices, that which depends on excess and that which depends on defect.
