Chasin' down a Hoodoo...

« on: November 07, 2008, 07:52:01 PM »

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. (AP) — When 10-year-old Austin Smith heard Barack Obama had been elected president, he had one question: Does this mean I won't get a new gun for Christmas?

That brought his mother, the camouflage-clad Rachel Smith, to Bob Moates Sports Shop on Thursday, where she was picking out that special 20-gauge shotgun — one of at least five weapons she plans to buy before Obama takes office in January.

Like Smith, gun enthusiasts nationwide are stocking up on firearms out of fears that the combination of an Obama administration and a Democrat-dominated Congress will result in tough new gun laws.

"I think they're going to really try to crack down on guns and make it harder for people to try to purchase them," said Smith, 32, who taught all five of her children — ages 4 to 10 — to shoot because the family relies on game for food.

I'm not as worried as I used to be. The Court has finally demonstrated a willingness to step in and provide the same protection of the Second Amendment as it has traditionally provided for the rest of the Constitution. With the checks and balances of the system working, one should not have to worry that their most fundamental rights will be undermined with changing political winds.

Sigh.  Just to add a bit of information, there are plenty of Democrats who own guns... like some of the ones in Montana and the junior senator from that state, Jon Tester.  Farmers and ranchers have them around to at least deal with varmints that could harm the stock.

Don't give me "sigh."  Anyone can look at Obama (and my) state Illinois to see the antigun hysteria, and what lengths it can be taken when in power (e.g. Hizoner Daley: that was his brother Bill on the far right this afternoon).

It never ceases to amaze me the touchiness of this subject.  And the laws that go with it.  In the olden days, you carried a weapon on you for protection, and it was expected that you at least had a knife on you.  Now, when we shoot an inruder in the house, in some states, the intruder has the right to sue.  Is it just me, or is it any small wonder about the reaction, even as outspoken and somewhat waco as this one.  I'm no gun nut, and I have no intention to go around with a derringer in each pocket, a 9er on my hip and a Glock 10 strapped to my side, but it seems to me that we have a fundamental right to defend ourselves against those who would harm us and ours.  Anyway, unless you are a sociopath who sees every living human being and beer can as a target, others don't have cause to fear the tools you carry.  That is unless you are trying to harm the person with the tools unmolested.  Then its kind of your fault.

Sigh. Mass hysteria; that's all this is. Even under Democrats, gun ownership is still allowed; we just want to know that the people purchasing guns are (1) not felons and (2) sane. I don't think that's too much to ask.

See IF you can find Obama's work for the Joyce Foundation and what (unethical) work that group did in support of anti-gun legislation and attempts to influence the Supreme Court. The threat is real.

Wrong.  Just look across the Mississippi to Illinois Mr. Y, even if you can't look to Chicago, where it's even more hysterical, from Hizoner on down.  And of course the dear leader elect.  Washington DC used to be worse, but the Supreme Court helped to rectify that of late.
