OC SummerFest Diary
« on: August 01, 2003, 03:54:51 PM »

Thursday July 31 --

Mor Ephram and TonyS arrived at midnight.

Friday Aug 01 --

Bobby, Frobisher, and Clint arrived at 11:00 AM.

Walked across the street and had some coffee and breakfast at the Starbucks (or as Jerry Seinfeld calls it "Fourbucks) -- how so very yuppie of us. Then went back to the apt and just relaxed and talked about things and discussed what we were going to do later in the day. Went to lunch and talked some more.

Decided to go to St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral for the "Supplication to the Theotokos" service at 6:00 PM.

Nik arrived at 3:18 PM.

Weather is rainy today but shaping up for a nice day tomorrow - forecast says partly cloudy with a high of only 84. Sweet!

Friday Evening --

After the service was over at St.Sophia's, we took some pictures of the church and then went back to the apt in VA.

We ordered 3 large Veggie Pizzas for dinner along with copious amounts of wine. We ate every last piece and drank every last drop (well, at least everyone else drank every drop -- I didn't since I had to drive back to the house in MD).

As of 11:00, Dustin and his wife have not made it in yet. Traffic must have been bad or they got started a little later than expected.

In the morning the guys are going to the grocery store to pick up the food and I am going over to the Picnic area to get things set up. Keble is bringing some frisbees and some other toys to keep the younguns occupied.

We plan to meet at the Picnic area of Lake Needwood at 11:00.

That's all for today -- will update things tomorrow afternoon.

I hope people like desserts. We've made heaps!  Unless it gets hit by a meteor coming through the roof, or the cats go mad and attack it, I beg to report that there is a Ukrainian Poppyseed Cake cooling and destined for the picnic.  There's also a dairy free apple cake for anyone fasting. and more....

Tomorrow I'll make the Black bean salad.

We can't arrive because we live in the county already

Saturday Morning --

Mmmmm Deserts! Who needs meat when you can eat pure sugar! We can all sit around and watch the kids run around in circles until they drop!

It's 9:40 and I am off to the site. Have to stop by and get the charcoal and other stuff.

Got a digital camera for pictures. Will post some pictures tomorrow

Actually the worst we did was feed them fattening desserts.

Well, it's good to know that some folks are having a good time.

Some of us have had to work the last couple of days (including today). :'(

We were talking last night about a late winter (March)  OC.Net SkiFest !

Vermont/New Hampshire is always a good area. Killington is usually too crowded and expensive, but the ski areas in New Hampshire, like Loon Mountain, are good.

http://www.loonmtn.com/winter/statmap.html

Southwest Airlines flies into Manchester Airport and the price is pretty reasonable.

Had a good time at the picnic today. We had more than enough food to eat (Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, Chicken) all grilled by Master Chef Nik. Ebor made a bunch of desserts, as promised, and they were excellent eats.

After eating we took a walk down to the boathouse where we rented some rowboats and paddle boats and went out on the lake for a while.

Then went back to the Apt to clean up and split into 2 groups for Vigil -- some went to the ROCOR Cathedral with Nik and others to the OCA Cathedral with TonyS. Since Keble, Ebor and myself are OLD, we decided to skip it and just go take a nap!

After Vigil, they all went out for dinner at Clydes in Reston, VA. Got back to the apt around midnight.

Tomorrow, everyone is doing their own thing for Liturgy.

I went to St. Gregorios Orthodox Church this morning--

Mor Ephrem, where were you???

Actually, it was a very spiritual experience, even though the only parts I understood were the readings, the creed, and the peace.  The was one other European head there, and I think he was Greek. Nobody cared.

I'm glad you liked our offerings, Tom.  It was a pleasure.  If anyone wants a recipe I'll gladly give them out.   :)

Many thanks to you and Mrs. S for your kindness in taking the 2 older children down to the lake and on the paddle boat.  (It would not have been a good idea to take the youngest down to the water.  He would have tried to get in the lake as he loves to be in water but he can't swim yet.  Best he didn't know there was large bit of water near.)  They told us all about the ride and what fun it was and the colour of the boat and that my son nearly took the boat into an island and lots more.  Catherine also said that the others had a "Row boat" and "Made Mr. Bobby do all the work, since he was youngest." ;D

Well now, are the three of us "old" or are we....ummm  "Well aged?" or "Grown in wisdom"? or "Collectable" (since I'm told that something has to be 50 or more y.o. to be an "antique") :D We weren't just napping we were "conserving our energies"..yes, that's it.

It was a fun time and it didn't rain until it was over, so it worked out well.

Summerfest continued this afternoon when we went down and met Mor Ephrem, ByzClint, Frobisher and Bobby at the National Shrine and toured it.  Some pictures were taken and I think some were also taken yesterday at the picnic.  Perhaps they will somehow appear on the forum.

We last saw the four of them as they were going to drive around D.C. and look at the sights.  They were all cheerful and well then.  With luck they were able to avoid getting trapped between Tour Buses in Formation down around the Mall.  ;)

I only wish I'd had more chance to chat with some other folk like Anastasios and his wife.

Oh yes, right by the picnic shelter was a tree stump that seemed to have been trimmed into a sort of chair.  Several of us were pondering it and thinking that we needed to put a placard on it for a photo that it was reserved for our Esteemed Moderator and Pope, Hypo-Ortho as his "cathedra" chair.   :D

We were sorry that Serge couldn't make it.  Anastasios told us about his car breaking down.  We missed you, Serge.

Things are well other than my car ALSO breaking down.

I'm thinking of driving up to DC later in the year, perhaps I can get "the DC crew" to get together for dinner?  :)

How was that dinner, by the way?

I'm glad to hear that the get together went well. Hurry up with the pictures though. Those of us who couldn't get there would still like to put some faces to the names.

Seeing as there was no chance of me getting there, I consoled myself by spending almost a week on Mt. Athos beginning with the feast day of St. Athanasios. Next to Pascha and the feast days for Panagia, this is probably the biggest event on Mt. Athos with well over one thousand monks gathered at Great Lavra (plus many lay visitors such as myself). Huge!
I also made the aquaintance of a Japanese monk while I was there. 8)

Please keep me in mind if anyone plans coming to Greece to visit Mt. Athos, as I can smooth out a lot of the hassles involved in getting there. This goes for those of you who are not Orthodox as well since the first two times I went I was not yet Orthodox.

For those of you who are regulars on Mo'nachos, Andonis just came back from two and a half weeks on the holy mountain. He stayed overnight at our place before going and then had dinner with us on his return, prior to taking the bus down to Athens. He will probably post something of his experience in the next few days (on monachos.net)

unworthy John.

Just got home...

One of the most fun trips I've ever been on.

TomS is the world's best host, and everyone present made it truly spectacular.

Hope everyone had a safe trip home(TonyS and Mor Ephrem still on the road as I type).

Looking forward to having a gettogether again sometime in the future!

And remember...

I agree with everyone else that this was a one-of-a-kind experience. The days were so jampacked with stuff to do that it was a shame to leave behind all the other things that one can do in the area.

I am quite saddened that we all couldn't stay longer and see more things. And I am now praying for each one of you that I met up there, especially those I met for the first time. May God grant you every good desire!

In Christ,

Matt  :'(

We are preparing the lost can opener as a second-class relic of the event, as soon as we find an appropriate reliquary--- something involving Tupperware, I would venture......

Also, for you ByzCath types: you missed a chance to see and even meet a cardinal in full plumage.
