Fundamentalists are most definitely hardcore Zionists, and they are having a real impact on U.S. foreign policy.
At the same time, I think the author of that article was a little too hard on them. They do not look on Jews as a sacrifice for Christianity. The Fundamentalists sincerely believe that the deaths of 2/3 of the Jews is simply an unavoidable part of prophecy and that God will punish those responsible for it.
In fact, if anything, Dispensationalist Fundamentalists look on Jews as "the Chosen People", in other words, as first-class citizens of the kingdom; anyone else who gets in is merely second class.
The author is right, however, that they will never waiver in their support of the state of Israel. The Israelis could blow up a Palestinian Church full of Palestinian men, women, and children, and I believe the Fundies would cheer. I really do.
