This is very true. What alot of people fail to understand is that there are a few gay men who genuinely care for one another and have established a life together. A few of my friends are in this state. These men really do love eachother, and although I think love is misplaced (because I believe homosexual relationships outside of God's will), I do not deny the genuiness of their bond with one another.
Yes, that is what makes it such a difficult situation. I have a cousin who is gay and in a long-term relationship with his partner. They're both wonderful people and I believe their love for each other is genuine (though misplaced as you said).
Perhaps the best answer is to remember that we're all sinners and just pray for them.
