Is this the appropriate place to put this question? Is there a good book that I can read about the Church Mothers?  I found one, but of course it had this horrible overly-feminist spin on everything, and I'd like to find a straightforward book without an agenda.

Thank you for any suggestions!

A book I have and which I highly recommend is
"The Lives of The Spiritual Mothers" published by Holy Apostles Convent.
It is available for purchase form Eastern Christian Supply: http://www.easternchristiansupply.biz/products.cgi/c120/c14/c7298/c21260/41744

I agree with George, but the whole series is great. I would get them all if you can. I am including links to Amazon.com so you can get free shipping, as these are quite a heavy book set.

The Lives of the Saints
Volume 1: The Lives of the Three Holy Heirarchs
Volume 2: The Lives of the Holy Apostles
Volume 3: The Lives of the Saints of the Holy Land & Sinai Desert
Volume 4: The Life of the Virgin Mary, The Theotokos
Volume 5: The Lives of the Pillars of Orthodoxy
Volume 6: The Lives of the Spiritual Mothers
Volume 7: The Lives of the Holy Women Martyrs
Volume 8: The Lives of the Holy Prophets

Also i would recommend the available books from the modern Matericon series:

Modern Matericon: God-Pleasing Women
Volume 2: Maria of Olonets - Desert Dweller of the Northern Forests
Volume 3: Abbess Thaisia of Leushino: Spiritual Daughter of St. John
Volume 4: Letters to a Beginner on Giving One's Life to God
Volume 6: Kindling the Divine Spark - How to Reserve Spiritual Zeal
Volume 8: Blessed Euphemia of Serbia - Life of an Apostolic Eldress

Quote
The forgotten desert mothers By Laura Swan
In introducing readers to the sayings, lives, stories, and spirituality of women in the early Christian desert and monastic movement, the author finally sets the record straight that women played an important, influential role in early Christianity. The book journeys between desert, monastery, and city to reveal the stories of ascetics and solitaries whose stories rarely are heard

Quote
Praying with the Desert Mothers By Mary Forman
Fourth- and fifth-century Mediterranean desert mothers known as ammas (spiritual mothers) were the founders of the Christian community in the early church. This text introduces the lives, sayings, and stories of these remarkable spiritual elders. For each topic a true story is drawn from a modern person's experience of seeking God. Liturgical Press

Question a friend, perhaps he did not do it; but if he did anything so that he may do it no more.
A hasty quarrel kindles fire,
and urgent strife sheds blood.
If you blow on a spark, it will glow;
if you spit on it, it will be put out;
                           and both come out of your mouth
