Friend with myeloma
« on: May 21, 2008, 08:18:29 AM »
My husband just got off the phone with his friend, Neil, who has myeloma. He has undergone treatment and was thought to be in remission. The disease is incurable, but with the right medication remission is possible and the hope is always that a cure is found in time.

Neil has six children, all school age and his wife works to support the family. There is a chance that the family could move to Australia to obtain drugs that aren't available in New Zealand.

Please pray for Neil and his family.

Lord, have mercy!

Bone marrow transplantation might help... of course, it's not a "panacea," but if done properly and if he is strong enough to endure the first 2-3 months post-transplantation, he could benefit greatly.

Dr. Rainer Storb at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center is one wonderful expert in BMT whom I personally know.

George,

Apparently he has had the bone marrow transplate, but the disease has made a virilent comeback.  :(

Yes, that had been his hope. He was an extremely fit and positive person with a deep faith, and they had hoped that this would have given him an edge. It's very sad.

Yesterday, my husband received a phone call from Neil's wife to let us know that Neil has passed away. Everyone was very hopeful that the transplant would grant him more time. He seemed quite well for sometime, but suddenly there was a rapid deterioration and he was gone within a few days. :(

Lord, have mercy on Neil and grant that his memory be eternal.
