You are right. I apologize for having sacked Constantinople. I really need to stop doing that.

The current death toll is 50,000 and may triple in size before it is all done. An equal number are injured and displaced, and many children now have no parents alive; and many parents have no children left living after this horrible event. Chinese eager to adopt quake orphans

 :'( +Lord have mercy

(^ tears of joy)

When my wife and I first read this article we immediately went to our prayer/icon corner and offered prayers of thanksgiving...  shedding sweet tears of joy.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24779086

“Much attention has focused on the large numbers of children who died in the May 12 earthquake, crushed when their schools collapsed, and on their parents' pain. But days of vivid earthquake coverage on state-run TV left many Chinese wanting to do more than donate money, moving many to offer to adopt.”

+Lord have mercy

“it's a surprising turnabout in a country in which government red-tape, poverty and traditional attitudes long combined to discourage adoption

+Lord have mercy

Adoption in China is a new trend… many Chinese thought it shameful to take in a child that wasn't related by blood, and thought adopted children would be discriminated against.”

+Lord have mercy

thousands of Chinese are rushing to offer their homes

+Lord have mercy

China's tremendous post-quake outpouring of sympathy

+Lord have mercy

the number of Chinese wanting to adopt the earthquake's orphans may outnumber the orphans themselves

+Lord have mercy

some, whose own baby didn't survive childbirth this year, understand loss and want to help

+Lord have mercy

Authorities are trying to protect the children

+Lord have mercy

I want to give girls a chance

+Lord have mercy

We see [the earthquake news] every day and can't stop crying.”

O, sweet Lord Jesus Christ, source of all true mercy and compassion, thank you for shining forth Your grace into the hearts of the Chinese people.  In a land that has been infamous for its dispensable view of human life, You, O Lord, have taken the callousness of sin and transformed it into the light of mercy and compassion.

Most Holy Theotokos, St. John the Wonderworker of Shanghai and San Francisco, Chinese martyrs of the Boxer rebellion, please pray to God for us.

"The true number of earthquake orphans will take a long time to know, with an estimated 5 million homeless and more than 29,000 missing in the mountainous region.”

For travelers by land, sea, and air, for the sick, the suffering, the captives, and for their salvation, let us pray to the Lord.
