Need Help ASAP Letter to an Archbishop
« on: May 08, 2008, 10:46:33 AM »
I have never written a letter to any hierarchs, but I'm sending off a letter of support for a friend who is seeking ordination to the priesthood.  Can somebody give me style advice on addressing the letter and salutation?  How is the following?   Thanks bunches to everyone.

Header:

Most Rev. JOB, Diocese of the Midwest
Orthodox Church in America
Address.....

Salutation:

Greetings in Christ Your Eminence:

On the spiritual path somewhere between the Simpsons and St. Theophan the Recluse, but I still can't see the Springfield city limits sign yet.

His Eminence the Most Rev. JOB
Archbishop of the Diocese of the Midwest
The Orthodox Church in America

Christ is Risen! Vladyka Bless!

Closing: Kissing your right hand -or- Asking your blessings

would probably work.

Past posts reflect stages of my life before my baptism and may not be accurate expositions of Orthodox teaching. Also, I served as an Orthodox priest from 2008-2013, before resigning.

I agree with this 110% although knowing Archbishop Job how I do, he isn't big on formality. But this is a perfect outline!

Thank y'all for the help.  I did leave in the opening line with Vladyka bless.  I did not do the "kissing your hand".  Yes, I know it's traditional, but it sounds kinda cheesy.  I just left in the sentence "Wishing you joy and peace in our Risen Lord".  AdmiralNick- since you know Vladyka Job, do you think he'd be offended that a layperson would send a letter of testimonial in support of someone's application for the priesthood?    Too late now, since I already mailed it, but just curious.

Please do not think that I found anything incorrect about the way you addressed the letter, but I would suggest that the name the city of which he is the bishop, in Orthodox parlance, is a part of the bishop's name.  Thus, I would have inserted, "...Archbishop of Chicago."  "The Midwest'" is a description of the territory his diocese encompasses.
"...Strengthen the Orthodox Community..."

Ohhh no - you are absolutely right.  How could I have forgotten that!  Oh well, what's done is done.

I would drop the "Most Rev." and just use "His Emimence Job"

As an analogy, I would address the GOA Metropolitan of New Jersey like this:

His Emimence Evangelos
Metropolitan of New Jersey
12345 Anywhere Lane
Anywhere, NJ

Your Emimence (or Sevasimiotate in Greek):

Of course not, he wants to hear from his flock and he encourages them to speak freely. Also, don't worry about leaving out Chicago, he won't even notice it. As long as you saluted him with Master (Vladyka) bless, I'm sure you'll be ok. If he says anything, tell him I told you it was ok  :D

Of course I could mention it to him tomorrow if you really want me to  :police:  J/K

As I said though, he's not big on the formality thing, so I wouldn't worry about it.
