...I hate going to protests even if it's for a cause I support.

I can't even point to my sig quote as a reason for this flagrant display of stupidity.

A professor of mine once remarked about leaving the peace movement when he noticed people getting up on the podium screaming at the top of their lungs, with a crazed look, and full of hatred,

"PEACE NOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!"

He went and became a monk after that.

I'd laugh, except as an amateur historian, I'm just repelled by the lack of knowledge of the protesters.

Weren't they taught anything?

We cannot judge on the basis of the photo without context.
Perhaps it may be irony?

George,

Stop all this non-judging nonsense. You will reduce the posting volume of this forum! ;)

From what I understand, this was taken at one of the protests against China hosting the Summer Games held in San Francisco this past week and it was not meant to be ironic.

Considering my experience in all sorts of protests over the years, I'm willing to believe the worst.

I must say, I'm very choosey about protests myself. That's why I prefer smaller groups where I can personally get to know the other protesters and see whether we are on the same wavelength. I also think that "candelight vigil" type protests are much more powerful- or a simple statement to which all the protesters can agree. A few years ago, I joined several other Christian protesters against the mandatory detention of asylum seekers in Australia, and we unfurled a banner on the detention centre fence which simply said: "JESUS WAS A REFUGEE". A photograph of this banner is still used to this day as a powerful symbol for Christian Churches in Australia- and was also used last year by the NCC for it's refugee week poster.

I agree.  Nothing annoys me more than the well meaning doofus who brings the "KEEP YOUR ROSARIES OFF MY OVARIES" sign to an anti-war protest.

Yes, I've seen that, and recently.  The problem lately is that there seem to be a group of professional protestors, so to speak, who can't stick to the issue at hand and all but force their fellow protestors of a various issue to also join them in protest of another issue at the same time.

Amen to that, Father. May I slide in on that prayer, too!  :-[
