St. James

« on: April 07, 2008, 04:31:35 AM »

Is this an Orthodox prayer or a Roman Catholic prayer?... And if it's Orthodox, is there any more to it?

Holy St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle against principalities and powers and rulers of darkness. May God rebuke them, we humbly pray. By the power of God, thrust into hell all the wicked spirits that roam the earth seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Thanks and God Bless†

Come, let us wonder at the virgin most pure, wondrous in herself, unique in creation, she gave birth, yet knew no man; her pure soul with wonder was filled, daily her mind gave praise in joy at the twofold wonder: her virginity preserved, her child most dear. Blessed is He who shone forth from her!

Holy Father Patrick, pray for us

A prayer that is known and loved by those of us old enough to remember the prayers said in convent schools.  One that I still use (60 years later) every day with the comfort and strength of old familiarity.

O Holy Michael, Archangel,
Defend us in the day of battle
Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
May God restrain him, we humbly pray, and do Thou,
O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God
Thrust down into Hell, Satan and all the other wicked spirits,
Who wander through the world to the ruin of souls.
Amen.

Here's an Orthodox prayer addressed to St. Michael and the other Archangels:

"Supreme Commander of the Heavenly Hosts, we unworthy ones implore you that by your supplications ye will encircle us with the shelter of the wings of your immaterial glory, and guard us who fall down before you fervently and cry, deliver us from dangers, since ye are the Marshall of the Hosts on High."

I personally use

"O Lord God, and eternal King, send O Lord, Your Archangel Michael to help Your servant and deliver me from all my enemies, visible and invisible."

I always liked that one, personally.
